Beloved Rapper OG Maco Passes Away At 32

Family mourns the loss of the creative spirit who inspired many with his music.

OG Maco, the Atlanta rapper known for his viral 2014 hit "U Guessed It," has died at the age of 32. According to reports from TMZ, OG Maco passed away on December 26, 2023, at a hospital in Los Angeles.

The rapper, born Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., had been receiving medical care following a self-inflicted gunshot incident on December 12. Initially, his family had informed fans through social media on December 16, stating he was in "critical but stable condition" and receiving quality care.

With heavy hearts, his family shared the news of his passing on Instagram, stating, "With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ben, known to the world as OG Maco. His life was a testimony to resilience, creativity, and boundless love. Through his music, passion, and unwavering spirit, he touched so many lives and left a lasting impact." This touching tribute highlights the deep affection his family felt for him and the positive influence he had on others.

Born and raised in College Park, Georgia, OG Maco had made significant strides in the music industry after rising to fame with his hit single "U Guessed It." The infectious track became popular primarily through the social media platform Vine, leading to its remix featuring rapper 2 Chainz, which peaked at No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song opened doors for Maco, allowing him to sign with Quality Control Music, the label responsible for launching some of hip-hop's biggest acts.

Throughout his career, Maco released several mixtapes and EPs, capturing attention with his unique style. His debut mixtape, "Live Life," marked his entry to the spotlight and established him as one of the defining artists of the mid-2010s. Despite this, his output slowed down due to various challenges.

One of the major setbacks came after he survived a near-fatal car crash in 2016, leaving him with multiple skull fractures and injuries to his vertebrae. This incident took its toll on his physical health and career momentum. Three years later, Maco publicly shared his struggle with necrotizing fasciitis, which he experienced after being inadequately treated for what he described as a minor rash. Documenting this challenging period on Instagram, he expressed, "I hope it gives someone hope. I’ve been going through this alone 90% of the time." His openness about his mental and physical health struggles revealed his vulnerabilities and helped others relate to his experiences.

His manager, Poppa Perc, confirmed the news of Maco's passing, posting on social media, "We lost a legend last night." This heartfelt sentiment was echoed by fans and fellow artists alike, as many took to platforms to honor the rapper's legacy and influence. OG Maco was not only recognized for his artistry but also for championing other budding musicians, like Doja Cat, whom he signed to his label Originality Gains Greatness (OGG).

The outpouring of grief from fans, friends, and families reinforced how deeply Maco touched the lives of those around him. Many acknowledged how his resilience throughout various personal battles inspired them. His family concluded their statement, celebrating Maco's extraordinary life with words like, "While we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived - one which will continue to inspire and uplift others. Maco's influence, both as an artist and as a person, will remain forever etched in our hearts. Today, we celebrate a life extraordinary in every way."

OG Maco's passing leaves behind not only the music he created but also the legacy of empowerment and encouragement for others who face adversity. His work continues to inspire new generations and reminds many of the fragility of life.

With his family by his side during his final moments, it’s clear he was surrounded by love until the very end. This sentiment rings true for many who say their goodbyes to him, reflecting both his journeys and the impact he made even during his struggles.

Though he faced many trials, OG Maco's spirit and music will undoubtedly live on, influencing friends and fans as they carry forward his message of resilience.
