Beloved Journalist Deniz Arman Passes Away At 64

Renowned Turkish journalist lost his battle with lung cancer after decades of impactful reporting.

Deniz Arman, one of the veteran figures of Turkish media, tragically passed away on January 24, 2025, at the age of 64. His long-standing battle with lung cancer finally took its toll, following months of hospitalization at Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital. News of his untimely demise was shared by his close friend and fellow journalist Özay Erad, who expressed his sorrow, saying, "And once again, we lost a star from the media, a master pen. The hourglass has stopped. We lost a good person, a good journalist, and a good Beşiktaş fan, Deniz Arman."

Born on May 2, 1961, in Ankara to Kırım descent parents, Arman had deep roots in journalism. His father, Ülkü Arman, was also a journalist, which likely influenced his career path. He began his education at Çankaya Primary School and later graduated from TED Ankara College in 1979. He initially pursued higher education at the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) but transitioned to Istanbul University, where he completed his degree in economics.

Arman's journalism career kicked off at Milliyet newspaper’s economy desk, where he served from 1985 to 1991. He made his mark as he contributed to various publications, involving himself with Gırgır and Fırt magazines as well, enjoying collaborations with other noted writers such as Oğuz Aral and Altan Erbulak. He achieved national recognition when he joined the team of Mehmet Ali Birand on the famous show "32. Gün" at Show TV starting in 1992. His work on television significantly enhanced his public profile.

Over the years, Arman transitioned between several prominent media outlets, showcasing his versatility and talent. He became news director at Star TV around 1997, later returning to Show TV. His remarkable editing and presenting skills allowed him to excel at various platforms, including Habertürk and Vatan Newspaper. He spent valuable years with Kanal D as well, culminating his career there as the General News Editor from 2012 to 2014.

Off the screen, he married Bercis Gülerman, whom he met during their university years. The couple had one son, Volga, born in 1991. Arman also tried his hand at acting, playing the role of the Prime Minister in the 2004 film "Cumhurbaşkanı Öteki Türkiye'de."

Throughout his extensive career, his dedication to journalistic integrity and his charismatic television presence left lasting impacts on Turkish media. Colleagues and fans fondly remembered him not just for his professional contributions but also for his passion for the Beşiktaş sports team, which he loyally supported.

Arman’s funeral will take place following the noon prayer at Beşiktaş Vişnezade Mosque, where friends, family, and admirers are expected to gather to pay their respects to the media icon. His passing is widely mourned across Turkey, marking the end of the career of one of its most respected journalism figures.

Deniz Arman will be remembered not only for his many contributions to the field of journalism but also for the people he inspired. Both colleagues and viewers have noted his enthusiastic portrayal of news stories and his unwavering commitment to truth and ethics in reporting. His legacy will continue to resonate within Turkish media history.
