Beloved German Actor Horst Janson Dies At 89

Janson captivated audiences with iconic roles and left a lasting legacy on television.

Germany has lost one of its most beloved television actors, Horst Janson, who passed away at the age of 89. Known for his iconic role as "the Bastian" and his time on the popular children’s show "Sesame Street," Janson's death has sent waves of sadness through the nation.

Janson's passing was confirmed by his wife, Hella, on January 28, 2025. His death follows a series of serious health challenges over the past year, including a stroke described as occurring during the summer of 2024, which led to his hospitalization. He had gone through rehabilitation, but complications followed when he fell down the stairs at his home, resulting in significant injuries, including a brain hemorrhage and broken hand.

The actor had struggled with health problems for quite some time, even experiencing an infection acquired during hospital stays. His health vices meant he spent extended periods under medical care, including spending his last Christmas in the hospital.

Horst Janson was not only known for his engaging television characters but also for his warm personality off camera. His long-standing peers have expressed their grief at his passing. Jutta Speidel, another star of German television, remarked, "Horst was one of the kindest and most wonderful colleagues. I cherished him as both a colleague and as a person." Likewise, actress Liselotte Pulver added, "What sad news. With Horst Janson, we lose one of the greats of the German-speaking acting stage."

Janson’s career spanned over five decades, starting with his rise to fame through the ARD series "Salto Mortale" in 1968, followed by his iconic role in "Der Bastian" from 1973, where he played the character of the aspiring teacher who falls for a doctor shortly before beginning his teaching career. This character mirrored Janson's playful spirit and demeanor, establishing him as one of Germany's darlings on screen.

Fans will undoubtedly recall Janson’s endearing performances on "Sesame Street" from 1980 to 1985, where he charmed generations of children as "Horst", contributing to the show’s legendary status among young audiences. Known for playing likeable characters, Janson's on-screen charm extended to various television hits, including "Forsthaus Falkenau" and "Tatort".

Janson's personal life was also marked by meaningful relationships; he spent over four decades married to Hella Ruthardt, contributing to his grounded nature, as he often described his acting career as a privilege.

Despite his struggles with health, Janson maintained his artistic involvement, performing at various theater festivals and remaining active until his declining health became more pronounced last year. He had been slated to perform at the Bad Hersfelder Festspiele but was unable to due to his deteriorated condition.

The legacy of Horst Janson is etched not only through his unforgettable roles but also through the impact he had on his colleagues and the audience he treasured. Describing Janson's spirit, friends have noted, "He always played the nice, approachable types. Those who knew him say he was just like this in real life." His congenial manner and charm left lasting impressions on everyone he met.

Horst Janson is survived by his second wife Hella, with whom he shared two daughters. His passing marks the end of an era for German television, taking away from us not just a talented actor but also someone who sincerely connected with people.
