Barbara DeBernarda Gerard, who passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, at the age of 81, was recognized for her vibrant personality and remarkable contributions to education and the arts. Born and raised in the Bronx, Barbara dedicated much of her life to pursuing knowledge, achieving both undergraduate and doctoral degrees. Her academic pursuits started at New York University, where she earned her degree in art, and later at Nova Southeastern University, where she received her Ph.D. in education.
Her professional career was largely spent at the New York City Board of Education, where she inspired countless students throughout her tenure. Known for her tireless dedication, Barbara was more than just an educator; she was also the former president of the National Organization of Italian American Women, using her platform to advocate for cultural awareness and empowerment. Barbara’s passion for education went hand-in-hand with her love for the arts, as she was also a talented painter and actively supported artistic communities.
Her personal life was equally fulfilling. Barbara was the proud mother of her son David and his wife Maria, as well as the loving grandmother to Ada Mae, whom she affectionately called 'Nanny'. Her family described her as generous and outgoing, always bringing warmth and joy wherever she went. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Hartenstein, and her beloved parents, Arthur and Edith. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on through the cherished memories of all who knew her.
Meanwhile, Peter Gerard McCarthy’s life, marked by joy and adventure, came to an end on February 10, 2025. Born on July 10, 1946, Peter was the youngest of four sons born to William and Lillian McCarthy. He spent his early years enjoying the spirited adventures of youth, from selling newspapers to playing youth baseball, before eventually relocating to Weymouth, Massachusetts, during high school.
Peter graduated from Holy Cross College, majoring in Classics, and went on to have a fulfilling career as an English teacher. He was known for his advocacy for all students, particularly those who struggled academically. His teaching tenure included significant roles at Billerica High School and Marshall Middle School, where he not only taught but also coached sports, leaving lasting impressions on the lives of many students.
Devoted to his family, Peter married Carlotta Masiello, with whom he shared over 51 years filled with travels, adventures, and love. Fondly remembered as someone who was always there for his friends and family, Peter’s life was defined by his caring nature and active involvement within the community. His dedication did not wane after retirement; he remained engaged, continuing his zest for life until his sudden battle with cancer which took him too soon.
Their families invite friends and community members to celebrate their lives, taking solace together and sharing the memories left behind. Both Barbara and Peter embodied love, generosity, and community spirit, having made impactful contributions to their respective fields and to the lives they touched. Their legacy will encourage others to carry forward their commitment to education, arts, and community involvement.
