Beloved General Hospital Star Denise Alexander Dies At 85

Denise Alexander's iconic role as Dr. Lesley Webber left a lasting legacy in daytime television.

Denise Alexander, a beloved daytime television actress best known for her role as Dr. Lesley Webber on the iconic soap opera General Hospital, passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 85. Her remarkable career spanned decades and left an indelible mark on the world of daytime drama.

Born on November 11, 1939, in New York City, Alexander was destined for a career in the arts, influenced by her father, Alec Alexander, a talent agent who represented notable figures like Sal Mineo and Frank Gorshin. The family moved to the West Coast when she was young, paving the way for her entry into the entertainment industry.

Alexander began her acting career at the tender age of 12, making her debut on the television series Armstrong Circle Theatre. Her early years were filled with appearances on classic shows such as The Philco Television Playhouse, Kraft Theatre, and Father Knows Best. By the time she turned 20, she had already established herself with roles on The Twilight Zone, The Loretta Young Show, and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

In 1960, Alexander took her first step into daytime drama, portraying Lois Adams on the short-lived series The Clear Horizon. Her career took off in 1966 when she landed the role of Susan Hunter Martin on Days of Our Lives, a character that quickly became a fan favorite. "The character caught on and sparked something with the audience, and that is how Susan became an important part of the show," Alexander reflected in a 2010 interview.

Her success on Days of Our Lives led to a lucrative offer from General Hospital in 1973, where she was cast as Dr. Lesley Webber. This role would become her most iconic, as she navigated complex storylines involving love, betrayal, and family drama. From her tumultuous relationships with Dr. Rick Webber and Dr. Monica Quartermaine to her struggles with the Cassadine family, Lesley became a central figure in the soap's narrative. Alexander's portrayal resonated with viewers, capturing their hearts and earning her a dedicated fanbase.

Despite her success, Alexander faced challenges in her career. In 1984, a contract dispute led to her departure from General Hospital, and she subsequently joined Another World as Mary McKinnon. However, the commute between Los Angeles and New York proved too taxing, prompting her to leave the role after three years.

In 1996, Alexander made a triumphant return to General Hospital, with the revelation that her character had not died as previously thought but had been held captive by the Cassadines. This comeback delighted fans, and she continued to make appearances on the show until her last appearance in 2021.

Throughout her career, Alexander's talent was recognized with a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series in 1976. She also appeared in various other television shows and films, including Crime in the Streets, Hotel, and Pretty the Series.

Outside of acting, Alexander was a passionate photographer and published photojournalist. She married director Richard A. Colla in the 1960s, becoming a stepmother to his daughter, Elizabeth. Tragically, Colla passed away on December 24, 2021.

Denise Alexander's contributions to the world of soap operas are immeasurable. Her portrayal of Dr. Lesley Webber not only defined her career but also became a significant part of daytime television history. As Genie Francis, who played her daughter Laura on General Hospital, shared, "I loved her. She loved me. I stole her good stuff." This sentiment reflects the deep impact Alexander had on her co-stars and the generations of actors that followed.

Her legacy lives on through her performances and the cherished memories held by fans and colleagues alike. As the soap opera community mourns her passing, they celebrate the life of a woman who dedicated herself to her craft and touched the lives of many.
