Japan's beloved 923-shaped Doctor Yellow train, known for its unique yellow color and the belief it brings good luck, is set to retire this month. The train, which has long served as a rail inspection vehicle, is often seen as a symbol of fortune among train enthusiasts. Following its retirement, JR Tokai has announced plans to exhibit the Doctor Yellow at the Linear Railway Museum in Nagoya starting this June.
JR Tokai president Shunsuke Niwa commented, "We hope everyone looks forward to the second life of the Doctor Yellow at the Linear Railway Museum, where it has been loved and cherished." The upcoming exhibition will also feature special events to celebrate its legacy.
Adding to the excitement surrounding the retirement, BICO•GHI Co. has introduced three limited-edition gold products commemoratively crafted with the essence of the Doctor Yellow. These products, which include pure gold cards, coins, and figurines, have all received official approval from JR Tokai. They are now available for purchase starting January 16 through the company's official online store.
The gold cards, each weighing one gram, feature intricately engraved designs of the Doctor Yellow and are offered in four seasonal variations along with one secret design, totaling five unique designs. Priced at 39,000 yen each (approximately $350), they come packaged in elegant paulownia boxes.
For those seeking something more substantial, the company also offers gold coins weighing 10 grams and 30 grams, priced at 363,000 yen and 1,089,000 yen, respectively. The traditional coin shape is cleverly combined with the modern design of the Doctor Yellow, enhancing its appeal.
Perhaps the most remarkable product is the pure gold figurine, replicately crafted to resemble the Doctor Yellow train. Known for its impressive presence and luxury feel, the figurine will be released with serial numbers. The limited edition features just 30 pieces of the leading car type, weighing approximately 16 grams, which will retail for 923,000 yen (about $8,000). More exclusive is the full train version, inherently limited to only 10 pieces, which measures about 40 centimeters long and weighs around 135 grams, priced at 6,300,000 yen (over $56,000).
The Doctor Yellow holds fond memories for many travelers and train lovers alike, who have often spotted this rare sight on the tracks, rarely seen due to its private schedule. Its ingenuity and the affection of fans will be cherished as it transitions to its new role as part of the museum’s exhibition.
With its impending retirement, both the limited-edition collectibles and the upcoming exhibition promise to keep the spirit of the Doctor Yellow alive for generations to come, offering fans new ways to connect with this iconic piece of Japanese railway history.
