Beloved Actress Priscilla Pointer Passes Away At 100

Priscilla Pointer, known for her iconic roles in Carrie and Dallas, dies peacefully in her sleep.

Priscilla Pointer, the beloved actress whose career spanned over six decades, has passed away at the age of 100. Pointer, known for her iconic roles in the television series Dallas and the horror classic Carrie, died peacefully in her sleep on April 28, 2025, at an assisted living facility in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The news of her passing was shared by her daughter, Oscar-nominated actress Amy Irving, on Instagram.

In her heartfelt tribute, Irving wrote, "Priscilla Pointer, acclaimed stage, television and film actress, and mother of David, Katie, and Amy Irving, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 100, hopefully to run off with her two adoring husbands and her many dogs. She most definitely will be missed." Irving, who was married to famed director Steven Spielberg from 1985 until 1989, expressed the deep sense of loss felt by the family.

Pointer was born on May 18, 1924, in New York City to artistic parents. Her father, Kenneth Keith Pointer, was an artist, and her mother, Augusta Leonora Davis, was an illustrator. This creative environment fostered her passion for acting, which she began pursuing in the 1940s. Pointer's stage career flourished as she performed in productions such as A Streetcar Named Desire and The Caucasian Chalk Circle.

Her breakthrough came in the late 1970s when she captivated audiences with her performance in The Heiress. However, it was her role as Rebecca Barnes Wentworth in Dallas that solidified her status as a household name. Pointer's character met a dramatic end in a midair plane collision during the show’s sixth season, leaving a lasting impression on fans.

Pointer's legacy is perhaps most strongly tied to her role in Carrie, where she portrayed the mother of Sue Snell, played by her real-life daughter, Amy Irving. This collaboration marked the beginning of several joint projects, including Honeysuckle Rose (1980), Acts of Love (1996), The Competition (1980), and Micki & Maude (1984). Their on-screen chemistry and familial bond added a unique layer to their performances.

Throughout her career, Pointer appeared in a wide range of films and television shows. Notable films include Mommie Dearest (1981), Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), and Blue Velvet (1986). She also made guest appearances on popular series such as The A-Team, Judging Amy, and Cold Case.

Pointer's contributions to the arts extended beyond acting. In 1947, she co-founded the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop with her husband, Jules Irving, a respected actor and director. The workshop became a significant platform for nurturing talent and creativity in the performing arts.

After the passing of her first husband, Jules, in 1979, Pointer married actor Robert Symonds, with whom she remained until his death in 2007. She is survived by her three children—Katie, David, and Amy Irving—alongside eight grandchildren, all of whom carry on her artistic legacy.

Pointer's impact on the entertainment industry was profound, with her performances often highlighting the complexities of motherhood and the human experience. Her ability to infuse her characters with depth and emotion resonated with audiences, making her a cherished figure in both film and television.

As tributes continue to pour in from fans and colleagues alike, Pointer's contributions to the arts will be remembered for generations to come. Her son, David K. Irving, confirmed her passing and expressed gratitude for the love and support received during this difficult time.

In a statement, actress Victoria Principal said, "Priscilla Pointer, my favorite TV mama and a wonderful woman, passed away today. My sincere condolences to Amy Irving and all of Priscilla’s family. Always a special place in my heart." This sentiment echoes the feelings of many who admired Pointer's work and the warmth she brought to her roles.

At the time of her death, Pointer's net worth was estimated to be around $3 million, a testament to her successful career and smart investments in real estate. She owned several properties in California, allowing her to enjoy a quiet life away from the spotlight.

Priscilla Pointer's final screen appearance was a voice role in the 2008 TV movie Sweet Nothing in My Ear. Her profound influence on the world of acting and her commitment to her craft will continue to inspire future generations of performers.
