Connie Chiume, the renowned South African actress famed for her performances in iconic roles, has passed away at the age of 72. Her family announced her death, stating she succumbed to health issues on August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital, located in Johannesburg. A public statement from her family shared through social media expressed their desire for privacy during this challenging time.

Best recognized for her part as Zawavari, the tribal leader, in the highly successful Marvel films Black Panther (2018) and the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), Chiume captivated audiences with her powerful screen presence.

Her death marked the loss of not just a beloved public figure but also of someone regarded as a trailblazer for many aspiring entertainers. Through her work, she established herself as an ambassador for her homeland, bridging cultural gaps and promoting the richness of South African narratives.

The impact of her work extended beyond entertainment, as she established the Connie Chiume Foundation, which focused on supporting arts professionals. This initiative aimed to uplift underrepresented voices within the creative sector, emphasizing her commitment to advocacy and community support.

Following the announcement of her passing, tributes poured in from fans, colleagues, and fellow entertainers, highlighting the resounding influence she had within the industry. South African actress Connie Ferguson expressed her disbelief at the news, sharing heartfelt condolences to Chiume's family and friends.

Director Mmabatho Montsho echoed the sentiments of loss, stating, "Oh no Mama! Condolences to family and all loved ones." Such expressions of grief underscored the deep connections Chiume had forged throughout her career.
