Beloved Actor Mario Ernesto Sánchez Dies At 78

Sánchez, known for roles in Only Fools and Horses and Miami Vice, passes away after a long illness.

Mario Ernesto Sánchez, the beloved actor known for his roles in Only Fools and Horses and Miami Vice, has passed away at the age of 78 after a long and painful illness. His death occurred early on April 14, 2025, at 3:03 am, as confirmed by a statement from his assistant to the South Florida newspaper, Diario Las Américas.

Born in 1947 in San Antonio de las Vegas, Cuba, Sánchez moved to the United States at the age of 15 during Operation Pedro Pan, a program that brought thousands of Cuban children to the U.S. amid the political turmoil in their homeland. It was in the U.S. that he pursued a career in acting, ultimately leaving a significant mark on both television and theater.

Throughout his career, Sánchez became widely recognized for his portrayal of a Colombian drug lord in the two-part Christmas special of Only Fools and Horses titled "Miami Twice." Additionally, he played a recurring role as a limo driver in the iconic series Miami Vice, appearing in five episodes and later taking on a different character in the 2006 film adaptation of the show.

Besides his television work, Sánchez had notable roles in Hollywood films such as Invasion U.S.A. (1985) and The Specialist (1994). His contributions to the arts extended beyond acting; in 1978, he founded Teatro Avante, a nonprofit theater organization dedicated to preserving Hispanic theater and culture in Florida. His work with Teatro Avante earned him recognition and respect within the Latino theater community.

In 2014, Sánchez was honored with the Legacy Award by the Latino Theater Company for his lifelong commitment to Latino theater in the United States and Latin America. Accepting the award, he expressed humility and pride, stating, "[It means] that we have done a lot but we have a lot more to do. That’s all it means. I’m humbled by it but at the same time I’m very proud. But I always feel we haven’t done enough." He emphasized the need to create more interest in theater among Miami residents, reflecting his dedication to the cultural landscape of the city.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from fans and colleagues alike. Ramón A. Sánchez, a fellow artist, remarked, "A glory of Cuba and the theater has left us: Mario Ernesto Sánchez. He is already with Lorca, Molière, Euripides, and many more greats of the theater. Rest in peace, Chachito, and thank you very much for your legacy." Actress Verónica Abruza also shared her condolences on social media, stating, "Sad news. Goodbye Mario Ernesto Sánchez. My condolences to his beloved children, family, and friends. I will always remember how kind you were upon my arrival in Miami; your attention, your chivalry. May your soul unite with the source of light and love."

Miami Art Promotion issued a heartfelt statement, saying, "The outstanding actor and director of Cuban origin Mario Ernesto Sánchez dies in Miami. His tireless work in the Cuban exile theater, since his early arrival in the United States, has earned him the valuable work of Teatro Avante, a group he founded, as well as the Miami International Hispanic Theater Festival, with almost 40 years of experience. Peace to his remains and condolences to his loved ones and friends. It also serves as a well-deserved tribute to his extensive career."

Sánchez's last interview took place in 2021, where he discussed his passion for Hispanic theater and the annual festival organized by Teatro Avante. He spoke about the mission of the festival, stating, "The mission of the festival as well as of Teatro Avante has not changed through the years: To preserve, enhance and further develop our Hispanic cultural heritage through the production and presentation of universal theatre and educational programs." He noted that while organizing the festival is hard work, his love for the craft makes it a rewarding endeavor.

As the entertainment community mourns the loss of this talented actor and director, Sánchez's legacy in the arts will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations. His commitment to enhancing the visibility of Hispanic culture through theater has left an indelible mark on the industry.

Details regarding his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon, as fans and colleagues prepare to pay their final respects to a man who dedicated his life to the arts and the promotion of Hispanic culture.
