Beloved Actor Ernst Hilbich Dies At 93

The charming cabaret artist reunites with his late wife Lotti Krekel after his passing from pneumonia.

Germany is mourning the loss of one of its beloved actors and cabaret artists, Ernst Hilbich, who passed away on February 20, 2025, at the age of 93 due to complications from pneumonia. Hilbich, known for his warm presence and infectious sense of humor, died peacefully at his home in Köln-Marienburg, just weeks shy of his 94th birthday.

His niece, Miriam Krekel, confirmed the news, stating, "My uncle passed away peacefully. Before he left us, he actually enjoyed one last Kölsch. The death of my aunt, his beloved wife Lotti Krekel, is something he never really overcame. He missed his Lotti dearly. Therefore, I am grateful, amid the sadness for this wonderful man, to know they are now together again.”

Ernst Hilbich’s career spanned more than six decades, making him one of the most recognized figures of German television and theater. He became particularly popular through his performances on shows such as "Am laufenden Band" and "Zum Blauen Bock," where his unmistakable humor and charm captivated audiences. One of his most cherished songs, "Heut' ist Karneval in Knieritz an der Knatter," became synonymous with Carnival celebrations and showcased his talent for engaging with viewers of all ages.

His work with the Augsburger Puppenkiste, where he lent his voice to the character "Sams," is fondly remembered. Even as he aged, Hilbich remained true to his craft, with colleagues and audiences loving his playful spirit and versatility. He once reflected on the absurdity of fame, saying, "Um Gottes willen! Dadurch bin ich doch überhaupt noch im Gespräch. Da wär ich doch schon blöd, wenn ich jetzt sagen würde: Ich hab' auch den Hauptmann von Köpenick gespielt ... Wertvoll ist, was hängen bleibt," expressing how thankful he was for the lasting memories he created for his fans.

Born on March 16, 1931, Hilbich began his theatrical career at the tender age of 17. He found early success at the Rheinisches Landestheater and later spent eleven memorable years with Düsseldorfer Kom(m)ödchen, which he later referred to as the best time of his life. Even when he transitioned to film and television roles throughout the 1960s and beyond, his heart remained with live performances, where his talent shined the brightest.

Hilbich's marriage to fellow actress Lotti Krekel was another significant cornerstone of his life, as they shared both personal and professional milestones. They became known as the ultimate TV couple, gracing screens together and sharing their lives for over 45 years. It was not just the shared career but their deep bond and mutual support during each other's endeavors. They finally married in 2003 after living together for nearly three decades.

The loss of Lotti Krekel, who passed away just months before him on April 11, 2023, was particularly hard for Hilbich. Her death, which occurred only days before what would have been their 20th wedding anniversary, left him heartbroken. Those who knew them noted how supportive Lotti had been throughout their lives, taking care of Ernst until her own passing.

Reflecting on their love, Miriam Krekel remarked on the unwavering bond between her uncle and aunt. "They were extraordinary together. They always supported each other and had the kind of love most people only dream of. I’m grateful they are reunited now, where they can carry on their love story side by side,” she commented.

Despite the personal tragedies, Hilbich's comedic legacy will undoubtedly continue to endure. His ability to transcend generational gaps—having mesmerized audiences since the 70s, he remained relevant as younger generations discovered his work—underlines his vast influence on German entertainment. He was renowned not just for his performances but for being a constant presence on television, as people remarked about how he seemed to always be there—"Man sah ihn als Kind, und wenn man später selbst Kinder hatte, war er immer noch da," as one journalist put it. His enduring appeal and charm were reminiscent of simpler, joyful times cherished by all who tuned in to watch him.

Funeral services for Hilbich are scheduled to take place on March 14, 2025, at St. Severin Church in Cologne, the same venue where Lotti Krekel was honored. Together, they will be laid to rest beside one another, where their remarkable love story can continue even beyond their years.
