Belo Horizonte Mayor Fuad Noman Hospitalized Again Amid Health Struggles

The mayor, battling respiratory failure, continues to focus on his duties through virtual engagements.

The Mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman (PSD), was hospitalized for the fourth time since the end of November 2024 due to acute respiratory failure. On January 3, 2025, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (UTI) of Hospital Mater Dei, where he is currently receiving ventilatory assistance. According to medical reports, Noman is undergoing tests to assess his health condition, which has been deteriorated by his previous health issues related to cancer. This latest hospitalization reflects the serious challenges he faces as he manages his duties as mayor.

Noman's health struggles have significantly impacted his political responsibilities. The 77-year-old mayor was unable to attend his official inauguration ceremony on January 1, where he was re-elected to lead the city until 2028. He participated virtually, due to medical advice to avoid crowded places, as his immune system is severely compromised. During the video call, he struggled to speak, and his speech was read by Vice Mayor Álvaro Damião. Just prior to hospitalization, he had shared updates on educational funding through his social media—an effort to maintain his connection with the community.

This latest incident follows several months of health complications. Noman was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) last July, which required surgery and extensive chemotherapy treatment. Despite announcing he was cancer-free by October 2024, he has faced frequent hospitalizations since then. For example, he was treated for pneumonia and sinusitis early December and later for intestinal bleeding, both conditions stemming from his cancer treatment and weak immunological state.

During December 2024, Noman attended various medical evaluations related to rehabilitation treatment and physiotherapy, reflecting the toll cancer treatment had taken on his body. His medical team has stressed the importance of avoiding infection, which has informed their recommendations for his limited public engagements.

The mayor’s health situation has raised concerns within the community and among political circles. It has also sparked discussions about succession should Noman’s health continue to decline. Many citizens are worried about the stability of local government amid these uncertainties.

Medical professionals have stated the current episode of acute respiratory failure is serious but treatable. Acute respiratory failure can occur due to various health complications, and symptoms might include severe shortness of breath and altered consciousness. Hospital doctors have not yet confirmed the underlying cause, indicating they are conducting thorough evaluations.

Noman’s representatives and the mayor himself have expressed gratitude for the community's support during this challenging period. They encourage residents to remain engaged with civic issues, underscoring Noman’s commitment to continue serving his role as long as his health permits. A statement from his office confirmed, “The mayor is determined to work for the citizens of Belo Horizonte and is grateful for all the messages of support.”

The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as Noman continues to receive medical care. Residents are hopeful for his recovery, as he has shown resilience throughout his illness, balancing treatment with the demands of his office.
