Belfast's Business Landscape Thrives With New Developments

Major investments and accolades fuel growth and recognition for Belfast's hospitality and professional sectors.

Belfast is taking significant strides forward as various businesses and culinary establishments earn accolades and make strategic investments, showcasing the city’s thriving economy and vibrant food culture.

Staycity Group recently declared its plan to launch its first property within Northern Ireland, the Staycity Aparthotel. Positioned centrally at Beaufort House on Wellington Place, the aparthotel is anticipated to open its doors by 2026, following a hefty £20 million investment secured through Lotus Property. This development marks Staycity's inaugural entry point within Northern Ireland, reflecting the firm’s commitment to amplifying its European presence.

“We are delighted to partner with such a well-known operator in Staycity Group. This is another in a series of good news stories for Belfast and is also an exciting time for Lotus Property, with ‘living’ a huge part of our future growth plans as a business,” stated Alastair Coulson, Managing Director at Lotus Property. The new establishment will transform the previously occupied HMRC offices, bringing to life 98 studio and one-bedroom apartments paired with amenities suited for both business and leisure clientele.

Speculations on the anticipated demand for short-term accommodation have been invigorated by Belfast’s recent developments, including the completion of the Grand Central Station, which has attracted increasing numbers of commuters to the city. “Between the completion of Belfast Grand Central Station bringing more commuters than ever before and major tourism events, Belfast city centre is thriving and poses a huge opportunity for short-term accommodation offerings to be successful,” emphasized Coulson.

Meanwhile, culinary luminary Michael Deane celebrated the recognition of his latest venture, mrDeanes, which has just earned its prestigious spot as the only Belfast restaurant listed among the 36 new Bib Gourmands for 2025 by the Michelin Guide. Deane expressed delight, noting, “It’s excellent news. We were hoping for one, but we haven’t been open for long, so it was a bit of a surprise.” The restaurant, which opened its doors last year, thrived on being described by Michelin Guide judges as “a restaurant bursting with vitality” and offering exceptional value for both food and wine.

The accolade not only enhances Deane’s reputation but also shines light on the growing culinary scene within Belfast. Despite the recognition, Deane did express mixed feelings, observing, “There would have been good to see much more [recognition] in Northern Ireland.” The Michelin Guide's focus on quality and value suggests promise for Northern Ireland’s dining industry, albeit with challenges remaining.

“We have to make do with the Bib Gourmand for now,” he acknowledged, reflecting on the competitive environment for restaurant accolades and the hurdles faced by the local industry. Noting the challenges posed by rising operational costs, he remains optimistic about the culinary talent in Belfast, happy to see fellow establishments like Ox and The Muddlers Club joining him with Michelin-star recognition.

On the corporate front, DWF Belfast continued its growth momentum with the recent announcement of seven promotions within its office. Notable among these promotions are construction partner David McNeice stepping up to a more senior role and insurance lawyer Louise Trimble being promoted to partner. Julie Galbraith, head of DWF’s Belfast office, expressed pride at the promotions, saying, “We are incredibly proud of our colleagues who have achieved these well-earned promotions. Their hard work, expertise, and dedication to client service continue to strengthen our offering in Belfast.”

These promotions are part of DWF’s global strategy, which reported growth alongside 238 promotions across its international offices, highlighting not just individual merit but also the thriving potential of Belfast as a hub for professional services.

With developments like Staycity's new aparthotel, the celebration of mrDeanes’ culinary accomplishments, and the career advancements at DWF Belfast, it is evident the city is showcasing its dynamism and potential. The blend of hospitality, culinary tradition, and professional excellence paints a picture of Belfast as it evolves, seeking to hold its own on both the national and international stages of business and cuisine.
