Becky Lynch Returns To WWE And Challenges Lyra Valkyria

After a year away, Lynch captures tag titles but faces rivalry with Valkyria ahead of Backlash

Becky Lynch has made a sensational return to WWE, and she’s not holding back. After nearly a year away from the ring, Lynch re-emerged at WrestleMania, teaming up with fellow Irish wrestler Lyra Valkyria to seize the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. This comeback has reignited her competitive spirit, and she’s ready to make her mark once again.

"I took what I thought was going to be three months off during the summer, when my contract came up," Lynch explained. "I was like, ‘Okay, seems like a good time to take a little break, get some stuff done.’ Then other things came up – I was filming ‘Star Trek,’ and then ‘Happy Gilmore.’ There was talk [of a return] around Rumble time, but then at the last minute, I got a skin condition. The next big event was WrestleMania, so it seemed to make sense, especially if I could take Bayley out of the mix and ruin her dreams. It felt doubly brilliant.”

However, Lynch's return wasn't without its drama. Just a week after her triumphant WrestleMania appearance, she took to the ring on “Monday Night Raw” to reveal her shocking actions against Bayley, a fellow member of the informal group known as “The Four Horsewomen.” Lynch confessed to attacking Bayley to secure her spot as Valkyria’s partner for the tag match. "When we were coming up, ‘The Four Horsewomen,’ we were never a close alliance," Lynch noted. "We were ambitious women who wanted to change the game, change how things were done, and be seen as the biggest stars in wrestling, regardless of gender.”

Lynch’s rivalry with Bayley dates back years, with a notable moment in 2014 when Lynch defeated Bayley, generating significant fan support. Their relationship soured further in 2019 when Bayley struck Lynch with a chair, marking a turning point in their rivalry. “Twice I’ve been called to join a War Games team I had no business being in, because people wanted me to handle Bayley and they knew that I could,” Lynch said. "Now everybody’s so shocked that I attacked the woman that I’ve been fighting for years?"

Despite her initial success at WrestleMania, where she and Valkyria captured the tag titles, Lynch faced disappointment shortly after. The very next night, they lost the championships to Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, with Lynch expressing her frustration: "Lyra undoes all of my work, loses the very next day after I made her a double champ. What does anyone expect from me? Of course I’m gonna flip the lid.”

Lynch’s competitive nature is evident, especially considering her history as a two-time champion. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first woman to hold both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships simultaneously. With that pedigree, she isn’t shy about her expectations for her protégé, Valkyria. “Let’s look at Lyra’s track record,” Lynch insisted. "Lyra was talking about how she’s a better wrestler than me, but the first two matches after she won the Intercontinental Title, she lost. She lost those matches! What are you talking about? You’re the best? You should have given up that title. That woman should be embarrassed.”

The tension between Lynch and Valkyria has escalated to the point where they are set to face off for the Intercontinental Title at the upcoming “Backlash” event. Valkyria has claimed she is a better wrestler than Lynch, a statement that Lynch vehemently disputes. “I tried to be nice, I tried to help her. I came back, I did all the nice things, even though this was kind of simmering in the back of my head. Now that you’re bringing it up, that simmer is getting to a boil.”

When asked about the possibility of reconciling with Valkyria, Lynch stated, “That would be on her. When you think about it, I’m really the one that’s been attacked time and again. She’s been coming out here and attacking my character, telling me what a horrible human being I am.” Lynch’s expectations for an apology from Valkyria are high: “If she is willing to get down on her knees and apologize and say ‘I’m so sorry, Becky, I realize you’re the greatest of all time. I realize how wonderful you are.’”

As Lynch prepares for her match at Backlash, she remains confident in her abilities and is ready to defend her title when she claims the Intercontinental Championship. Her experience in the ring is complemented by her recent ventures into acting, including roles in the upcoming “Star Trek” series and the sequel to “Happy Gilmore.”

In December 2024, Lynch revealed her involvement in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” where she plays a role on the bridge crew. "I’m not sure how much I can give away, other than it was an amazing experience," she said. "Filming on the bridge, it was one of the most amazing sets I’ve ever been on.”

Additionally, Lynch has a surprise role in “Happy Gilmore 2,” set to release on Netflix on July 25, 2025. She expressed her excitement about working with Adam Sandler and the incredible cast, stating, “The world I got to play in was ridiculous and wonderful and incredibly fun.”

Despite her busy schedule, Lynch remains focused on her wrestling career, stating, “A lot of NXT wrestlers have come up to ‘Raw.’ Giulia, Stephanie [Vaquer] and Roxanne [Perez], they’re all newer. Sure, let them bask in my presence. If they want to step up, I will decide an appropriate time and place, and I will take them on and show them how much more they have to learn.”

In a recent interaction, Lynch also shared her thoughts on AEW’s MJF after meeting him during the filming of “Happy Gilmore 2.” She described him as “a very nice boy” and expressed confidence that he would agree with her views on Valkyria. MJF responded positively, stating he enjoyed his time with Lynch on set, calling her a “very nice girl and an upstanding citizen.”

As the anticipation builds for Backlash, where Lynch will face Valkyria, the wrestling world is buzzing with excitement. With her history, experience, and fierce determination, Lynch is ready to reclaim her spot at the top of the WWE hierarchy. Will she succeed in her quest for the Intercontinental Title? Fans are eagerly awaiting the outcome.
