Baylor Women’s Basketball Hosts Historic NCAA Tournament Game

The Bears celebrate their 21st consecutive tournament appearance and prepare to face Grand Canyon at home for the first time.

Baylor women’s basketball made history this past Sunday evening when they learned they would be the No. 4 seed and host their first NCAA Tournament game at the Foster Pavilion, marking another milestone for the program. The announcement, made during the Selection Show, was met with excitement from fans who gathered for the watch party, knowing they would face the No. 13 seed Grand Canyon (32-2; 16-0 WAC) on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Head coach Nicki Collen expressed her pride and excitement, noting, "That's a very freeing feeling just to know we've already accomplished something this program has never done. Now let's just go have some fun." Her sentiment reflects the significance of the occasion, as Baylor (27-7; 15-3 Big 12) has earned the opportunity to compete for the title on their own home court.

Fans are eager to fill the Foster Pavilion, encouraged by senior guard Sarah Andrews, who believes playing at home gives the team a distinct advantage. Andrews remarked, "I think it's great to be at the Foster, you know, it's a great atmosphere when we do play here. Hopefully we can get it done." The anticipation is palpable as they look forward to showcasing their skills before supportive home fans.

Historically, Baylor women’s basketball boasts impressive credentials, with their 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, which ranks as the third-longest active streak behind Tennessee (43) and UConn (36). The Bears have made it to the Sweet 16 on 16 occasions and aim to add to their legacy after falling to the No. 1 seeded USC Trojans last year.

If the Bears advance, they will face the winner between No. 5 Ole Miss (20-10; 10-6 SEC) and No. 12 seed Ball State (27-7; 16-2 MAC) after their first round matchup on Friday.

A notable boost for Baylor is the return of junior star forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs. After missing seven straight games with a knee injury, Littlepage-Buggs shared her enthusiasm, stating, "I'm so excited to be back with my teammates. Like, I think that's what I missed the most and just basketball aside...I love my teammates so much." Her comeback is expected to strengthen the team's performance as they head toward March Madness.

Meanwhile, Baylor’s men’s basketball team, seeded No. 9, will travel to Raleigh to face Mississippi State on the same day, March 21. Coach Scott Drew expressed his gratitude upon hearing their name called during the selection, underscoring the blessing of being included: "First and foremost, hearing your name called is always a blessing. We’ve been the first four out before, and that's no fun—No matter who you draw, you know it's going to be tough game." This highlights the fervor surrounding both teams as they prepare to compete.

Both Baylor teams have built momentum heading to the tournament, with returnees Littlepage-Buggs and fellow player Langston Love anticipated to make their first appearances of March. Coach Drew noted, "He's waited a long time to play in March, and I know he's going to be out there if he can. We expect he will," emphasizing the excitement surrounding their return.

With Baylor’s women poised to make their mark and the men set to rise to challenges abroad, this NCAA Tournament season stands as one of anticipation and potential for success. One thing is clear: Baylor basketball is ready to leave its mark once again.
