Bayern Munich has officially secured their 34th German league title on May 4, 2025, without even kicking a ball, thanks to a 2-2 draw by their title rivals Bayer Leverkusen against SC Freiburg. This result leaves Bayern with an unassailable eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table, with only two games left to play this season.
Leverkusen needed to win to maintain any mathematical chance of claiming the title after Bayern had drawn 3-3 with RB Leipzig the previous day. The draw at Freiburg meant that Bayer Leverkusen sits second with 68 points, while Bayern leads with 76, thus sealing their record-extending 33rd Bundesliga title since the league's inception in 1963.
“We can take a moment now to enjoy winning the Bundesliga,” Bayern's coach Vincent Kompany said in a club statement. “What an incredible feeling! I want to congratulate the players for their outstanding effort throughout the season. You’ve done this together. You’ve won it as a team.”
Despite the title win, Kompany emphasized that the season is not over yet, stating, “There’s still so much to look forward to. Let’s finish strong, together.” Bayern will participate in the new-format Club World Cup starting in June in the United States.
On the same day, Bayern players and staff gathered at the Käfer restaurant in Munich to watch the crucial match between Freiburg and Leverkusen. Sporting director Christoph Freund had shared earlier, “Many will meet today and watch [Freiburg vs Leverkusen] together.”
Among those present were key players including Joshua Kimmich, Eric Dier, Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane, and Vincent Kompany, who were spotted arriving at the restaurant. This gathering was not just a watch party but a celebration of their impending title win.
The match at Freiburg saw Maxi Eggestein put the home side ahead with a stunning strike from 25 yards just before half-time. Piero Hincapie then doubled Freiburg's lead with an own goal shortly after the break, putting Leverkusen in a precarious position as they fought to keep their title hopes alive.
Leverkusen finally found their footing late in the match, with Florian Wirtz scoring in the 82nd minute and Jonathan Tah equalizing in stoppage time. However, the draw was not enough to keep their title ambitions alive, as they now find themselves eight points adrift of Bayern.
For Harry Kane, this title marks the first major trophy of his career. The England captain, who has been in sensational form this season, has scored 24 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances. This victory comes after a series of near misses in his career, including a Champions League final with Tottenham in 2019 and two European Championship finals with England in 2021 and 2024.
Kane expressed his joy in a video, where he and his teammates celebrated by singing “We are the Champions” after learning of their title win. He recently broke a league record by scoring 60 goals in his first 60 league games for Bayern, further solidifying his status as one of the Bundesliga's top players.
As Bayern prepares for their next match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 33, they will also return the Meisterschale trophy to Munich. This match will be their last home fixture of the season, with the final league game scheduled against Hoffenheim on May 17, 2025.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen's coach Xabi Alonso, who has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, congratulated Bayern on their title win. “It is a deserved league win. They were the better, the more consistent team,” Alonso remarked, reflecting on his team's inability to defend their title this season.
With the Bundesliga title now in their hands, Bayern Munich has reasserted their dominance in German football after a disappointing trophyless season last year. Under Kompany's leadership, they have held the top position since Matchday 3, achieving 23 wins in 32 games, with only two losses and a league-high 93 goals scored.
As the season winds down, all eyes will be on Bayern Munich as they aim to finish strongly and add more silverware to their already impressive collection. With the Club World Cup on the horizon, the Bavarians are poised to make an impact on the international stage as well.
