Bayer Leverkusen is preparing for an overhaul of its goalkeeping position as reports indicate that the club may part ways with Matej Kovar. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who joined Leverkusen from Manchester United in 2023 for a fee of 5 million euros, might be leaving in the summer of 2025.
According to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, Bayer Leverkusen is in search of a new goalkeeper to succeed the current first-choice keeper, Lukas Hradecky, who is 35 years old. Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes noted, "Es ist Teil unseres Jobs und vor allem der Scoutingabteilung, sich immer auf allen Positionen auf Eventualitäten vorzubereiten. Despite Rolfes’ affirmation of Kovar’s development, stating, "Wir sind mit Matejs Entwicklung grundlegend zufrieden. Er hat in den zwei Saisons viel Spielzeit bei uns erhalten und ist die Nummer eins im tschechischen Tor geworden," there's speculation that Kovar's performance levels are not meeting the heightened ambitions of Bayer 04 after recent years of development and improvement.
During his tenure at Leverkusen, Kovar has made 30 competitive appearances. However, a staggering only four of those games have come in the Bundesliga, suggesting limited opportunities in the top flight. Most of his playtime has been in the DFB-Pokal, Europa League, and Champions League, but reports suggest that he has yet to fully convince in these pivotal matches, including a critical misstep in the recent Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich.
As Bayer Leverkusen looks to the future, several candidates are reportedly being considered to replace Kovar. Among them are Stefan Ortega from Manchester City, Noah Atubolu from SC Freiburg, and Alex Meret from SSC Napoli. Ortega, who is 32, and the 22-year-old Atubolu would both command transfer fees due to their contracts extending beyond 2025. Conversely, Meret’s contract is nearing its end, making him a more financially viable option for Leverkusen.
Meret is currently valued at approximately 12 million euros, making him the most expensive among the candidates to replace Kovar. Despite speculation about Meret’s future, his agent recently hinted at ongoing negotiations with Napoli for a contract extension.
