Munich is once again hosting one of Bavaria's most anticipated tourism events, the f.re.e Travel and Leisure Fair, this year from February 20 to 23. This annual exhibition brings together numerous regions eager to showcase their unique attractions and experiences, with the Bayerischer Wald proudly taking center stage as the featured partner region.
The Fränkisches Seenland, represented by County Mayor Manuel Westphal and the reigning Fränkische Seenland Queen, Leoni Dengler, presented the new cycling map for the "Tore-Türme-Schlösser-Radweg". This newly designated 84-kilometer cycling route connects various historical and cultural sites, inviting adventurers to discover the beauty of northern Bavaria beyond the picturesque shores of its lakes. “This offering is meant to ignite interest in discovering the multifaceted nature of our region, which has much more to offer beyond the lakeshores,” Westphal stated, highlighting how the route juxtaposes cultural experiences with natural enjoyment.
Interest in the Fränkisches Seenland has been on the rise. According to Hans-Dieter Niederprüm, Managing Director of the Fränkisches Seenland Tourism Association, last year saw over 1.3 million overnight stays, marking growth compared to 2023. Notable too is the average stay of 3.1 days, positioning the region among the frontrunners when it came to visitor retention within the Franconian areas.
The fair, which has historically attracted between 140,000 and 160,000 visitors, serves as an excellent platform for promoting local tourism. “Messeauftritte are important to engage those who have visited before with new offers and to intrigue those who haven’t yet discovered the Fränkisches Seenland,” Niederprüm added.
Moving from the lakes to lush forests, the Bayerischer Wald has carved its niche within the travel fair, with diverse cultural performances and local traditions showcased at their stand. Anna-Lena Fischer, head of the Tourist Information for Furth im Wald, explained their selection of representatives for the event, including highlights like the Further Drachenstich festival and the local Wolfauslasser tradition from Bodenmais. Each helped to symbolize the rich cultural fabric found within the district of Cham.
On February 20, as the fair commenced, Landtag representative Dr. Stefan Ebner and Regensburg County Mayor Dr. Ronny Raith expressed their support at the Bayerischer Wald stand. "Tourism is pivotal for our region's economy. I thank everyone involved for their commitment to this industry," said Ebner, adding, "I’m thrilled to see the Bayerischer Wald as the partner region of this international travel fair. It amplifies the beauty and attractions of our homeland to a wider audience, enticing more visitors to choose our area for their holidays!"
With prominent figures like Bavaria's Tourism Minister Michaela Kaniber dropping by the stand, local leaders received considerable validation for the hard work they’ve put forth to earn recognition on such platforms. Kaniber noted, “With constant accessibility now commonplace, the kind of downtime offered by the Bayerischer Wald is invaluable.”
The Arber, known as the King of the Bavarian Forest, garners additional attention, offering year-round programs for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. Dr. Raith highlighted the area’s exceptional balance: “The Bayerischer Wald offers something for everyone—families, fitness enthusiasts, wellness seekers, and nature lovers alike.” He praised the unique blend of premium hotels, charming guesthouses, captivating natural beauty, and comprehensive leisure facilities accessible throughout the region.
Also featured at the fair is Bad Füssing, where Mayor Tobias Kurz expressed satisfaction with how the event has showcased their tourist offerings. With initiatives such as the upcoming grill season preparations promised by Minister Kaniber, Bad Füssing remains committed to captivating visitors with its wellness and leisure pursuits.
Closing ceremonies on February 23, 2025, will recap the heightened interest and numerous engagements witnessed during the event, leaving attendees with fresh perspectives on Bavarian hospitality and culture. The f.re.e fair not only acts as a venue for tourism promotion but also fosters community and regional pride across Bavaria's diverse landscapes. Visitors left the fair not just with brochures, but with vibrant stories and experiences—an invitation to experience the captivating allure of Bavaria firsthand.
