Barcelona Faces Unstable Weather With Rain Forecasts

After a rainy start to the week, Barcelona anticipates more showers and cooler temperatures ahead.

Barcelona is currently experiencing a spell of unstable weather, marked by lower temperatures and intermittent rain, as the city braces for further showers in the coming days. After a brief period of spring-like warmth, the weather has taken a turn, with cloudy skies and forecasts predicting more rain.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the city faced a 100% chance of precipitation, with an expected rainfall accumulation of 16.4 mm. The temperatures hovered between 12°C and 15°C, accompanied by winds from the southwest at 14 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 21 km/h. This change in weather came after a particularly wet Monday, which marked the third rainiest day of the year in Barcelona, with some areas recording over 45 liters of rain per square meter.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the rain on Monday was intense, leading to numerous incidents, including flooding and fallen trees. The emergency services received a staggering 301 calls related to the weather, with the most affected areas being Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, and Vallès Oriental. The Civil Protection in Catalonia activated the flood alert plan (INUNCAT), as certain regions experienced rainfall exceeding 80 mm.

As the weather pattern continues to evolve, Wednesday, May 7, is expected to show some improvement, with a forecast predicting cloudy intervals and a reduced chance of rain at 25% during the day and 11% at night. The temperatures are anticipated to rise slightly, reaching a maximum of 20°C and a minimum of 11°C, with a thermal sensation of about 19°C. Winds will remain light, blowing from the south at 15 km/h.

However, the respite may be short-lived. The Meteocat has warned of more rain and potential storms later in the week. On Thursday, May 8, the forecast indicates cloudy conditions with rain expected from dawn until midday, maintaining maximum temperatures around 20°C and a minimum of about 12°C. The likelihood of rain will persist into Friday, May 9, with predictions of a very cloudy day and continuous rainfall throughout.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the weather is expected to remain unsettled. Saturday, May 10, may see some reduction in rainfall, but Sunday, May 11, is forecasted to bring back the rain, with an 80% chance of precipitation. The maximum temperatures during the weekend are projected to be 21°C on Saturday and 22°C on Sunday, with minimums around 15°C and 16°C, respectively.

The recent weather disturbances have not only affected daily life in Barcelona but also led to significant logistical challenges. The storm on Monday caused delays at the Barcelona airport, with flights experiencing waits of over an hour due to the adverse conditions. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that emergency services are prepared for any further incidents.

The instability in weather is attributed to new fronts moving into the Iberian Peninsula, which have been forecasted to bring widespread rains and lower temperatures across the region. The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has emphasized that the rains are expected to be constant, particularly in the northern and interior areas of Catalonia. This week’s weather is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of spring in the region.

In summary, as Barcelona navigates through this week of fluctuating weather patterns, residents are advised to stay informed about the forecasts and prepared for potential rain. The city’s beautiful spring scenery is temporarily overshadowed by clouds and showers, but as history shows, the sun will eventually return, bringing back the warmth and vibrancy that characterize Barcelona's charm.
