Banks Across India Closed For 12 Days In May

Customers urged to plan banking activities around multiple holidays this month

As May approaches, it’s important for customers to plan ahead if they have major banking tasks lined up. In May 2025, banks across India will remain closed for a total of 12 days, including national holidays, regional observances, and the usual weekend breaks. The list also includes Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s holiday schedule under the Negotiable Instruments Act, banks remain shut for several days based on local festivals and state-specific events.

Starting from April 29, banks across India will be closed for three consecutive days due to various regional holidays, including Parshuram Jayanti, Basava Jayanti, Akshaya Tritiya, Maharashtra Day, and Labour Day. Customers are advised to plan their banking activities accordingly. Despite the closures, digital services like net banking, mobile banking, and ATM facilities will continue to remain operational.

On April 29, 2025 (Tuesday), banks in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, will be closed in observance of Bhagvan Shri Parshuram Jayanti, which marks the birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram. This festival is celebrated by devotees who fast and offer prayers.

Following this, on April 30, 2025 (Wednesday), banks in Bengaluru, Karnataka, will observe closures for Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. Basava Jayanti celebrates the birth of the 12th-century philosopher and social reformer Basavanna, who is particularly revered in Karnataka for his teachings on gender equality and social reforms. Akshaya Tritiya, celebrated across India, is considered an auspicious day for new investments and purchases, symbolizing prosperity and financial success.

Then, on May 1, 2025 (Thursday), banks in major cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Patna will remain closed to mark Maharashtra Day and International Labour Day. Maharashtra Day commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra after the bifurcation of the Bombay State in 1960, while Labour Day honors the contributions of workers and advocates for their rights.

In addition to these specific holidays, banks in India are routinely closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, along with all Sundays. For May 2025, regular weekly holidays include Sundays (May 4, 11, 18, and 25) and the second and fourth Saturdays (May 10 and 24).

Moreover, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will also remain closed on May 1, 2025, in observance of Maharashtra Day, since both exchanges are headquartered in Mumbai.

Despite the bank closures, customers can still access digital banking options such as UPI, IMPS, online banking, and mobile apps, which will provide continuous access to banking services like money transfers and bill payments. Customers are advised to schedule their bank visits in advance to minimize last-minute rushes or confusion.

As May 2025 rolls in, it’s crucial for customers to be aware of these holidays to avoid any disruptions in their banking activities. Planning ahead can ensure that financial tasks are completed smoothly, without the stress of unexpected closures.
