Bank Indonesia (BI) has reopened its new currency exchange services in an effort to assist the public ahead of the upcoming Lebaran holiday. Starting on March 16, 2025, the exchange service is being conducted in mobile cash locations, which have become a highly sought-after way for residents to obtain new 2025 currency.
This latest round of currency exchanges marks the third of four planned periods, with the current exchange period scheduled from March 17 to 23, 2025. The final round is set to begin on March 23, 2025, from 9:00 AM WIB and will cover exchanges from March 24 to 27, 2025. Each individual is eligible to exchange a maximum of Rp 4.3 million, a limit aimed at managing currency distribution effectively.
The implementation of this program reflects BI's dedication to ensuring that new currency is accessible for all citizens, especially in light of the festive season where demand traditionally surges. According to KONTAN, registration for new currency exchanges must be done online via the Pintar BI website. Interested individuals are encouraged to prepare ahead and sign up at https://pintar.bi.go.id.
This time around, there are more than 1,043 designated locations for currency exchanges set up across Indonesia. The program specifically aims to facilitate individuals outside Java Island by offering them a fair opportunity to partake in the currency exchange process. The decision to allocate specific dates and locations to various regions supports BI's commitment to inclusivity.
Marking the start of this initiative, the first two periods were very successful and encountered high demand. The first period opened on March 3, 2025, for exchanges conducted from March 4 to 9. The second period followed closely, opening on March 9 and servicing exchanges through March 10 to 16. However, there have been reports of certain locations exhausting their stock of new currency, resulting in some disappointed individuals unable to secure their desired exchange. This highlights the necessity of early registration and arrival at the exchange sites.
In preparation for the last exchange period, BI introduced a phased registration system. The first phase specifically targeted exchanges throughout Java Island, leading to notable attendance. Now, the service aims to broaden its focus, ensuring individuals hoping to exchange in more remote areas can also participate.
Prospective exchangers need to be aware of several requirements set forth by BI when registering through the Pintar BI application. Alongside registering online, individuals are reminded to present the currency they wish to exchange at the designated locations and to arrive promptly to mitigate long waiting times. Instances of overcrowding are anticipated, particularly given the previous frustration experienced during earlier periods.
Bi Communiques have underscored the need for consumers to remain informed about the exchange quotas and limitations. Once the established limit of requests is met, service may close unexpectedly. As stated by a Kompas.com report, "The new currency exchange schedule this morning is only intended for people who want to exchange new currency outside Java Island." This ensures that various regions receive support while managing expectations regarding the availability of new currency.
Bank Indonesia continues to play a crucial role in coordinating this service to ensure citizen engagement with proper financial resources, especially as the Islamic holy month approaches. Leveraging technology through online registration aligns with modern consumer needs while also promoting safety and efficiency in the overall exchange process.
Overall, the new 2025 currency exchange is not just a service; it is a significant bridge between the central bank and the public, ensuring that all individuals have access to fresh currency, particularly as they prepare for festive consumer spending. Whether in bustling cities or remote villages, BI's initiative is a reminder of the importance of equitable service delivery in a growing economy.
