Bangkok Tops Songkran Destinations As Travel Trends Evolve

Tourism Authority predicts strong turnout and revenue during 2025 festivities amid changing traveler preferences.

As Thailand gears up for the much-anticipated Songkran festival in 2025, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has revealed that Bangkok remains the top destination for travelers during this festive period. With vibrant celebrations and water-splashing events across the city, Bangkok is poised to attract both domestic and international tourists eager to partake in the traditional festivities.

According to a report by Traveloka, Bangkok is the number one searched and booked destination for Songkran, thanks to its lively atmosphere and iconic locations such as Silom, Khao San Road, and Siam Square. These areas are well-known for their water fights and cultural celebrations, making them a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the heart of Thailand's New Year festivities.

Chiang Mai is also expected to draw significant attention this year, particularly with the exciting Water War Chiang Mai festival scheduled for April 13, 2025, at Lan Muang Chiang Mai Airport. This event promises to blend traditional Lanna culture with modern festivities, offering an experience that appeals to both party-goers and those seeking cultural immersion.

Chonburi is not to be overlooked, as it hosts the Songkran festival from April 6 to April 20, 2025. This extended celebration allows visitors to enjoy the festivities for a longer duration, with various activities planned throughout the province.

For those looking to party, Phuket is gearing up for a lively Songkran, featuring water splashing events at Patong Beach, Karon Beach, and Kata Beach. The nightlife along Bangla Road is expected to be bustling, providing entertainment well into the night. Additionally, visitors can also partake in merit-making activities at local temples, such as Wat Mongkol Nimit in Old Phuket Town.

Hat Yai is another popular destination, where visitors can enjoy water activities at Central Festival Hat Yai and Lee Garden Plaza, along with parades and musical performances throughout the Songkran period.

Interestingly, this year has seen a shift in tourist interest towards less crowded destinations that offer a more local flavor of the Songkran experience. Chumphon has emerged as a surprising favorite, with a staggering 95% increase in bookings, followed by Nakhon Phanom at 68%, Songkhla at 53%, Loei at 46%, and Nan at 40%. This trend indicates a growing desire among travelers to explore unique and tranquil locales during the festive season.

The TAT estimates that the Songkran festival in 2025 will generate an impressive 26.564 billion baht in revenue, with expectations of 476,000 international tourists and over 4.4 million domestic tourists participating in the celebrations. This revenue is anticipated to be split between international tourists contributing 7.324 billion baht and domestic travelers generating 19.240 billion baht, reflecting a 7% and 9% increase, respectively, compared to last year.

In addition to local festivities, the Songkran season is also a peak time for Thai travelers heading abroad. Many are looking to escape the heat and experience cooler climates, with China being a top destination this year. As promotional airfare makes travel to China more accessible, a significant number of Thai tourists are expected to explore new cities and natural wonders, enhancing their travel experiences.

Japan remains a popular choice as well, with many travelers seeking to discover new locations beyond the typical tourist spots. However, recent economic factors, including the impact of a recent earthquake in Myanmar and fluctuating currency exchange rates, have created some uncertainty in travel confidence. Despite this, the allure of Japan continues to attract Thai tourists, who are eager to experience its rich culture and stunning landscapes.

According to Pajjai Larp, an industry expert, the tourism market for Thai travelers during the Songkran festival is projected to recover to about 90% of pre-COVID levels. This recovery is indicative of a stronger desire among Thais to travel abroad, especially as the country continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape.

While the enthusiasm for travel is palpable, concerns about economic stability and the potential impact of international events linger. Tourists are advised to remain vigilant regarding their travel plans and financial investments, particularly in light of recent global developments.

In the international market, Agoda has reported that Tokyo remains the top choice for Thai travelers, followed by Hong Kong, Osaka, Shanghai, and Seoul. This shift in preferences highlights the growing interest in diverse travel experiences and the ease of access to various destinations.

Overall, as Thailand prepares for the Songkran festival, the tourism landscape is evolving. With a mix of traditional celebrations and new travel trends, both domestic and international tourists are set to enjoy an exciting and culturally rich experience. The anticipated revenue and traveler turnout reflect the resilience of the tourism sector and the enduring appeal of Thailand as a travel destination.
