CINCINNATI — The Cleveland Browns are adjusting their quarterback lineup as they head for their match against the Cincinnati Bengals. Bailey Zappe will serve as the team's backup quarterback, as reported by Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Dorian Thompson-Robinson will take the reins as the starter after Jameis Winston's demotion due to injury.
Winston, who had been starting for the previous seven games, was listed as questionable on the injury report following shoulder issues sustained during last week's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately for Winston, his performance had already been under scrutiny, having thrown eight interceptions over three games. His latest setback followed his benching during the Chiefs game when he threw his third interception.
Bailey Zappe, 25, has yet to see any action with the Browns this season, having been signed off the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad on October 22 after Cleveland's starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson, was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to ruptured Achilles tendon injury.
Reflecting on his new role, Zappe emphasized the importance of supporting Thompson-Robinson as he steps up as the main quarterback. 'It’s obviously a good opportunity,' Zappe stated. 'I’m here to help DTR as much as possible, whether it’s during the series or reviewing the game plan on the iPad.'
Previously under the New England Patriots, Zappe had notable performances where he started eight games during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, achieving four wins and four losses. He completed 63.2 percent of his passes, amassing 1,272 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, earning himself a passer rating of 78.5. Notably, he was released before the current season began, leading him to the Chiefs' practice squad.
Zappe has maintained his readiness throughout the week, running through the usual scout team drills and stepping up with the second-team offense when Winston was limited. 'So just like a normal week,' he said about his preparation. His familiarity with the Browns' offense, which is led by offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, has eased his transition. 'It wasn’t too big of a deal. I already knew it when I came here.'
Browns fans and staff alike are hoping his preparation pays off, as last week’s match against the Chiefs was marred by turnovers—six turnovers, to be precise. Zappe noted, 'Job No. 1 is keep the ball secure. Just keep it in your hands and keep it out of everybody else’s.' Given Winston's turnaround this season, Zappe's caution could provide the stability the team needs.
Despite the quarterback shuffle, the Browns are able to rely on additional key players. Tight end David Njoku is set to start after recovering from hamstring issues, expressing determination to play after feeling he was targeted severely when they last faced the Bengals. Njoku has recorded 56 catches for 439 yards and five touchdowns this season.
Defensive cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. has cleared concussion protocols, ready to contribute his talents against star Bengals receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Unfortunately, the Browns will be without some players, including defensive tackle Shelby Harris, sidelined due to elbow injury, and receiver Cedric Tillman, who will miss his fourth consecutive game.
On the other hand, for Cincinnati, left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. continues to be inactive as he recovers from fibula injury, which offers Cody Ford the chance to step up for the Bengals. Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins remains out due to illness. The projected matchup promises to be intriguing, as the two teams vie for positioning late in the season.
While Zappe remains one play away from taking on the responsibility as the Browns quarterback, his commitment to supporting Thompson-Robinson and maintaining the flow of the game could be what the team needs as they navigate the precarious waters of the NFL.
