Babyshambles Guitarist Patrick Walden Dies Aged 46

The former Babyshambles guitarist and collaborator with James Blunt passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of influential music and heartfelt tributes from fans and bandmates alike

Patrick Walden, the gifted guitarist who helped shape the sound of the British rock band Babyshambles, has died at the age of 46. The band announced the heartbreaking news on their official social media channels on Friday evening, June 20, 2025, leaving fans and fellow musicians mourning the loss of a remarkable talent.

In a statement shared by Babyshambles and frontman Pete Doherty, the band expressed their deep sorrow: "It is with deep regret and sadness that we share the news of Patrick Walden’s death. We feel very fortunate to have known, loved and worked with him and we kindly ask for respect and privacy during these difficult times. Peter, Drew, Mike, Adam." No cause of death has been confirmed.

Walden’s journey with Babyshambles began in 2003 when he joined the band as lead guitarist during a pivotal moment for Doherty, who was navigating a hiatus from his previous group, The Libertines. Alongside Doherty, bassist Drew McConnell, and drummer Gemma Clarke, Walden helped forge a sound that was poetic, chaotic, and uniquely British. The band’s self-titled debut 7" single was released in April 2004, and by the summer, the lineup was solidified with Adam Ficek joining on drums and percussion.

Babyshambles’ debut album, Down in Albion, released in 2005, quickly climbed into the UK Top 10 albums chart, propelled by singles like "F**k Forever," "Killamangiro," and "Albion." Walden’s guitar work was integral to the album’s success; he co-wrote six of the sixteen tracks, imprinting his distinctive style on the band’s signature sound. Doherty once described him as "the best guitar player I ever worked with," a testament to Walden’s skill and influence.

Before his time with Babyshambles, Walden had been active in the London music scene, playing with bands such as Fluid, the Six Cold Thousand, and The White Sport. He also worked as a live guitarist and session musician for notable artists, including James Blunt and Whitey, showcasing his versatility across genres.

Born on October 5, 1978, in Islington, London, Walden’s passion for guitar was ignited at the age of 13 when his estranged father gave him a guitar and a book of Eric Clapton songs. Reflecting on this formative moment in a 2017 interview with The Express, Walden said, "It became my whole focus. My school work fell away." This early obsession with the instrument would shape his life and career, leading him to become a celebrated guitarist known for his unique tone and style.

Despite his musical talents, Walden’s career was marked by struggles with addiction. In early 2006, he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend at their North London home, charges of which he was later cleared. That same year, he left Babyshambles, a departure officially announced in January 2006 by NME. His exit was largely due to his battles with heroin and cocaine addiction, which had taken a toll on his life and work. He later left London to seek treatment and sobriety.

In February 2016, Walden was found by neighbours at the bottom of a flight of concrete steps near his home. This incident prompted former Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek and Liam Gallagher’s guitarist Mike Moore to crowdfund for his treatment at The Cabin, a celebrity rehab centre in Thailand. Walden credited the facility with changing his life, telling The Express, "The Cabin changed everything for me. The staff went above and beyond to help. I would be dead without them and now I feel I am starting my life all over again."

By 2023, Walden had maintained his sobriety for several years. Speaking on the "22 Grand Pod" podcast, he reflected, "Since I turned 40 I haven’t taken a drink or anything. It’s quite nice to say that. But my whole relationship towards it has changed. I don’t want it anymore." His resilience and determination to overcome addiction were an inspiration to many who followed his story.

Fans and fellow musicians alike have paid tribute to Walden’s legacy. Rick Simpson wrote on social media, "Can’t believe this. Absolute genius on the guitar, Babyshambles were at their peak with Pat. But more importantly a genuine lovely guy. Down in Albion will always be a masterpiece to me." Karl Gibbs added, "Totally destroyed me this. Very sad to hear this. He was a brilliant guitarist and was hoping he would be coming back in Babyshambles. Watched some of his videos recently and thought brilliant he’s back. RIP Pat." Christopher Jones noted, "Quite the unique guitarist and, especially, his touch on Down In Albion will never be forgotten by those who love the band." The outpouring of grief reflects the deep impact Walden had on both the music community and his fans.

In December 2024, Pete Doherty hinted at a possible Babyshambles reunion to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album. Speaking to NME, Doherty said, "It is on the cards. We will get back together and get in a room with the instruments and play through the old songs, then get on stage and do it. But it’s the ‘who’ and the ‘when’ that needs to be worked out. I think we’ll just keep that one on the horizon and deal with that one next year." Sadly, with Walden’s passing, any such reunion will now be tinged with the memory of his absence.

Walden’s contribution to the British indie rock scene remains significant. Babyshambles released three albums during their active years—Down in Albion (2005), Shotter’s Nation (2007), and Sequel to the Prequel (2013)—all charting in the UK Top 10. Their music captured the raw, poetic energy of a generation, with Walden’s guitar playing providing a crucial backbone to their sound.

His legacy is not just in the notes he played but in the spirit he brought to his music and the lives he touched. As the music world bids farewell to Patrick Walden, it remembers a man who was more than just a guitarist—he was a creative force, a survivor, and a beloved friend. His story is a reminder of the highs and lows that often accompany artistic brilliance, and the enduring power of music to heal and inspire.
