Babilon Trio Announces Disbandment After 13 Years

Members Nori and Chiba plan to continue as comedy duo following O-chan's departure.

On February 11, 2023, the popular Japanese comedy trio Babilon announced their disbandment via their X (formerly Twitter) accounts. Members revealed their decision to conclude their group activities effective February 2, 2023, marking the end of their thirteen-year run as one of Japan's notable comedic trios.

Nori, one of the members, stated, "It has been decided we will conclude our activities as Babilon as of February 2. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout the years." This date aligns with their final performance, where Nori, along with Chiba Strogonov, plans to continue working together as a duo.

O-chan, the third member, confirmed his exit from the trio on the same day, emphasizing, "The reason for my departure is simple; I’m leaving the trio." He voiced his intention to continue his career as a comedian, indicating he would perform one last gratitude concert for their fans, saying, "I appreciate the support from all our fans!"

The trio, formed in 2010, was known not only for their lively and often physical comedic style but also for their internal dynamics. Despite facing multiple crises over the years, Nori mentioned, "We overcame numerous disbandment fears, but following discussions, we arrived at this agreement—much to everyone’s satisfaction." Their split has been described as amicable, crafted through mutual agreement rather than conflict.

The comedic group had carved out their niche on Japanese television, notable for routines involving physical gags. The public was also aware of the recurring tensions between members, often depicted humorously on shows like TBS's 'Wednesday Downtown.' Here, the trio participated in the 'Speed Disbandment Championship,' showcasing their real-time disputes. The event drew considerable attention when Nori and Chiba, amid dramatic comedic setup, were involved in physical escalations during the competition.

Despite their conflicts, Babilon thrived within the comedy scene, earning applause for their performances and antics. At their peak, they were described as the 'unruly trio,' with significant popularity among audiences who appreciated their exploitative and humorous style. There remains widespread speculation about the duo of Nori and Chiba—whose combined future endeavors as comedians are now anticipated but still uncertain.

With O-chan leaving, the dynamics shift yet again within the comedy ecosystem. Nori remarked on his partnership with Chiba saying, "We haven't embarked on any new activities yet, but I’ll head to the gym first!" The comment reflects not only Nori’s enthusiasm but alludes to their plans to continue crafting their brand of humor together.

Their departure from the trio format has led to reflections on their impact on the Japanese comedy scene. While Babilon has chosen to disband, their legacy of blending physical comedy with personal tensions resonates with fans. The lighthearted yet chaotic approach has been influential, fostering appreciation for laughter through challenges.

The dissolution reflects broader themes within entertainment, where paradigms of collaboration can shift and adapt. Babilon's story serves as a reminder of the intricacies involved in creative partnerships, highlighting both camaraderie and the occasional necessity for independence among artists. While O-chan charts his own path, Nori and Chiba's upcoming exploits will be closely watched by followers eager to see how the duo will evolve artistically.

This disbandment signifies not just the end of Babilon as we’ve known them, but also the beginning of new avenues for each of its members. It's evident their distinct comedic legacies remain alive and prominent, paving the way for future contributions to the genre.
