Aztecs Sweep Utah State In Tennis And Softball Showdown

San Diego State women’s tennis and softball teams secure impressive victories in Mountain West action

SAN DIEGO – In a thrilling day of collegiate sports, the San Diego State Aztecs showcased their dominance in both women’s tennis and softball, marking significant victories in their respective Mountain West competitions on April 12, 2025.

The San Diego State women’s tennis team achieved its sixth consecutive victory, defeating Utah State 4-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center. With this win, the Aztecs improved to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the Mountain West, while the Aggies fell to 5-13 and 0-8 in the league.

In doubles action, the Aztecs quickly set the tone for the match, capturing the doubles point for the fifth straight match. Yasmine Kabbaj and Gloria Alogo teamed up for the first time this season, delivering a convincing 6-1 win over Utah State’s Niyati Kukreti and Kylee Sperry on court two. Although Zoe Olmos and Charlotte Roesch faced defeat, losing 6-1 to Natalie Paterova and Maria Paula Ramos Garcia on court three, the Aztecs clinched the doubles point when Liisa Varul and Jo-Yee Chan triumphed 6-3 against Indya Nespor and Cielo Tapia-Cruz on court one.

Chan carried her momentum into singles play, getting off the court first with a solid performance, defeating Kukreti 6-4, 6-3 in the second spot. The Aggies managed to get on the scoreboard when Roesch fell 6-2, 6-1 to Garcia on the bottom court. However, Kabbaj added another win for the Aztecs, overcoming Nespor in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. This marked Kabbaj’s fourth consecutive victory in the top spot, reinforcing her status as the Mountain West Player of the Week.

Freshman Liisa Varul sealed the match for the Aztecs, clinching the team’s seventh conference victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sperry on court five. The Aztecs will look to continue their winning streak as they prepare to host New Mexico on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at noon.

Meanwhile, the San Diego State softball team faced off against UNLV in the first game of a three-game Mountain West series at SDSU Softball Stadium, achieving a decisive 8-0 victory in just five innings. The Aztecs improved to 25-14 overall and 9-5 in the Mountain West, while the Rebels dropped to 18-20 and 2-10 in league play.

San Diego State wasted no time establishing control of the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a grand slam that set the tone for the evening. The Aztecs continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the second, adding two more runs through a ground out and a single to right center. They capped their scoring in the bottom of the fourth with another two runs, resulting in an 8-0 lead.

The Rebels struggled to find their rhythm, managing only three hits throughout the game. Jesse Farrell, Karmyna Becerra, and Maddie Scott were the lone offensive bright spots for UNLV, each going 1-for-2. Farrell extended her hitting streak to three games and has reached base in six straight contests, while Becerra has now reached base in four consecutive games.

Jazmine Chavez took the mound for the Rebels, throwing 2.0 innings and striking out two batters, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Aztecs’ powerful lineup. Each team managed to execute a double play during the game, showcasing the defensive efforts despite the lopsided score.

As the series continues, the Rebels will aim to even the score in game two against the Aztecs, scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 4 p.m. The stakes are high as both teams look to solidify their standings in the Mountain West conference.

With both teams in action, San Diego State demonstrated its prowess in women’s athletics, leaving fans excited for the upcoming matches and the potential for further successes in the season.
