On Christmas Day, tragedy struck as an Azerbaijani passenger aircraft crashed near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan, claiming the lives of 72 individuals on board.

The aircraft, which took off from Baku, Azerbaijan, was en route to Grozny, Russia when it encountered difficulties and went down close to the Aktau airport. The incident involved 67 passengers and five crew members aboard, with officials reporting six individuals survived, albeit with severe injuries.

According to Russian news agency Interfax, the flight, identified as J28243, faced catastrophic failure of unidentified origin, sparking immediate rescue operations by local emergency services. This situation added to the urgency, as every moment counted for the survivors. Despite their efforts, the grim reality unfolded quickly—the number of fatalities began to rise as the wreckage was searched.

Media reports indicated initial confusion surrounding the passenger count, leading to various outcomes reported by different agencies. While Interfax and Kazinform provided updates about the fatalities and survivors, it was noted from Sputnik news agency reports, the number of survivors was reported as high as 12, with 10 of them needing hospitalization.

The investigation to determine the cause of the crash is underway, with speculation pointing to potential causes, such as technical failures or collisions with flocks of birds. Officials from Kazakhstan have stated their intention to conduct thorough examinations of the crashed aircraft.

Witnesses near the crash site described hearing loud explosions before they saw the plane plummeting to the ground. Among those unaffected by the crash, shock and sorrow grew as the reality of the situation began to settle.
