Axel Sandin Pellikka Shines With Hat Trick At U20 World Juniors

Sweden's captain leads his team to victory over Slovakia, scoring three goals and assisting another.

Axel Sandin Pellikka made headlines during the opening match of the U20 World Junior Championship, scoring a natural hat trick and leading Sweden to a convincing 5-2 victory over Slovakia on December 26, 2024, in Ottawa, Canada.

The 19-year-old defenseman, who is also a prospect for the Detroit Red Wings, proved why he was considered one of the top defensive players pre-tournament. The match started ominously for Sweden as Slovakia took the lead with Dalibor Dvorsky scoring just under 12 minutes after the puck dropped. But from then on, it was all about Sandin Pellikka.

Sandin Pellikka opened the Swedes' scoring account shortly after the game resumed with some fire, connecting on the power play just after the start of the second period. He received a crisp pass from Felix Unger Sörum, and with precision, he unleashed a powerful one-timer past Slovakian goalie Samuel Urban. "AXEL SANDIN PELLIKKA! Sweden's captain scored on the PP to make it a 2-1 game," exclaimed TSN as the tide began to turn in Sweden's favor.

The young defenseman followed up his power play goal with another stunning shot from near the B circle, hammering the puck past Urban once again. "WHAT A SNIPE! Axel Sandin Pellikka makes it 3-1 for Sweden with his second of the game," TSN noted, highlighting his newfound control of the game. With these two goals, Sandin Pellikka had already turned the game around, giving Sweden the momentum they needed.

But the highlight of Sandin Pellikka's performance was still on the horizon. With about six minutes remaining, he sealed his brilliant hat trick from the blue line, finding the back of the net with another clinical shot. "AXEL SANDIN PELLIKKA HAT-TRICK ALERT. Sweden's captain picks up his third goal," TSN reported, encapsulating the excitement of the moment as Sweden surged to a 4-1 lead.

Lest there be any doubt about the closing moments of the match, Sweden’s Linus Eriksson notched the fifth and final goal, securing the 5-2 victory. Slovakia managed to net another goal late courtesy of Daniel Jencko during a power play, but the game had already been decided.

This match not only marked the start of the tournament for Sweden but also showcased Sandin Pellikka's talent on the international stage. His overall contributions led him to be named the player of the game, highlighting his dominance throughout. Sweden's coach praised his leadership and skill, emphasizing how Sandin Pellikka is regarded as one of the players to watch not just for this tournament, but potentially for the NHL as well.

With the victory under their belts, Sweden looks to continue their strong form as they head to face Kazakhstan next. Eyes will undoubtedly be on Axel Sandin Pellikka as they aim to secure their first U20 title since 2012.

This opening match excitement sets the tone for what could be another spectacular U20 tournament, with fans eager to see whether Sweden can reclaim their status as champions.
