Axel Disasi Joins Aston Villa On Loan From Chelsea

The defender opts for a move to Villa Park after Tottenham fails to close the deal.

Axel Disasi has officially joined Aston Villa on loan from Chelsea, marking the end of his brief association with transfer talks, particularly with Tottenham Hotspur.

Disasi, the 26-year-old defender, left Stamford Bridge for Villa Park after agreeing on a £5 million loan fee with Chelsea. His arrival at Aston Villa signifies the club's proactive approach to addressing defensive weaknesses as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.

While Tottenham initially pursued Disasi, attempting to secure his services until the deadline, he reportedly preferred the move to Aston Villa, influenced by the club's pressing need for defensive reinforcements. According to Matt Law from The Telegraph, "Disasi briefly looked bound for Tottenham but he is understood to have preferred a move to the Midlands club."

The situation became more urgent for Villa after injuries to several key defenders left them with few options at the back. Villa's manager, Unai Emery, was eager to add strength to his defense, particularly with Pau Torres sidelined for weeks and Tyrone Mings still recovering from knee issues. The need was highlighted when midfielder Boubacar Kamara was forced to play as center-back, signaling how dire the situation was prior to Disasi's signing.

Despite Tottenham's late push, which came after Chelsea was open to letting Disasi move to another London club, his inclination to play for Villa prevailed. One industry source mentioned, "He made it clear to both Chelsea and Unai Emery he only wanted to move to Villa Park." The significance of Disasi's move became evident as the Premier League club sought to maintain momentum for their chase of European football.

With Disasi's arrival, he becomes Villa’s fifth signing of the January transfer window, following the acquisition of Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio, Donyell Malen, and Andres Garcia. This influx of talent is part of Villa's ambition as they prepare for the upcoming fixtures, emphasizing their commitment to competing for Champions League qualification.

Disasi’s record shows he has only made six appearances for Chelsea this season, primarily due to competition for places within Enzo Maresca's setup. Speaking to GFFN, it was noted, "He has struggled for minutes outside of this competition and has made only six appearances in the Premier League." His role at Aston Villa is anticipated to provide him with regular playing time as he seeks to revive his career post-Chelsea.

Interestingly, due to his participation for Chelsea earlier this month, he will not be eligible to play against his former club when Villa faces them in the Premier League on February 22. His debut for Villa is likely to take place against Ipswich Town on February 15, 2024.

Disasi’s move to Aston Villa has not only filled a gap for the club, but it also reflects his wish for more active engagement on the pitch. He joined Chelsea for €45 million from AS Monaco during the summer transfer window of 2023, but his limited involvement has prompted this loan move for the remainder of the season.

Overall, Disasi's switch to Aston Villa sheds light on the growing trend of players seeking opportunities where they can maximize their contributions. For Villa, the signing appears to be both strategic and necessary as they continue their push to solidify their status within the Premier League and potentially reach for European heights.
