AWS Expands S3 Storage Options With New Features

New storage classes and metadata tools launched to optimize data management

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled exciting new storage solutions aimed at enhancing their offerings for businesses and organizations requiring high-performance data management. At the recent Re:Invent 2024 conference, AWS showcased its latest advances focused on the S3 storage service, now made accessible via AWS Dedicated Local Zones—an initiative introduced last August.

With this rollout, AWS launches two new storage classes—S3 Express One Zone and S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access. These classes are crafted to address the increasing need for data isolation and residency requirements within specific data perimeters. The S3 Express One Zone aims at latency-sensitive applications, promising data access speeds up to ten times quicker than the standard S3 option, all at half the cost.

For organizations managing less frequently accessed data, the S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access presents a budget-friendly alternative. Setting up these storage solutions encompasses the creation of S3 directory buckets, which help streamline data organization within the specified data perimeter. AWS emphasizes the unique nature of these offerings, as they’re only operational within Dedicated Local Zones and not available at other AWS localities.

Dedicated Local Zones were rolled out to offer businesses and organizations complete control over their AWS infrastructure, where they decide the data center’s location according to their operational needs. AWS created this solution to alleviate the demands attached to managing on-premise Outpost racks at scale, giving organizations the dual advantage of cost-effective management and increased performance.

Diving deep during his keynote, CEO Matt Garman articulated the transformative capabilities of the new S3 solutions. He emphasized how AWS's S3 service, which reportedly stores over 400 trillion objects, evolves to meet the challenges posed by growing data volumes. The company has now introduced S3 Tables, aimed at integrating with Apache Iceberg, which is quite popular among users for analytics data organization.

Garman noted, "S3 Tables is a new bucket type specially for Iceberg tables. We basically improve the performance scalability of all of your Iceberg tables." Through this feature, users can achieve query performance speeds three times faster and up to ten times higher transactions per second. S3 Tables also relieve the burden of table maintenance chores, automagically managing events like compaction and snapshot management.

Another significant launch is the Amazon S3 Metadata. This tool takes object metadata and makes it rapidly queryable, ensuring real-time updates. Garman explained this innovative update adds immediate value as organizations scale their data and need reliable ways to locate specific information as data grows increasingly convoluted and complex.

He remarked, "We take all of your object metadata and store it in one of these new table models we talked about. So we automatically store all of your object metadata in an Iceberg table, and then you can use your favorite analytics tool to easily interact and query the data to quickly learn more about your objects and find the object you're seeking," stressing how this metadata control ensures organization and accessibility, reflecting AWS's commitment to enabling users to engage effectively with their data.
