AvtoVAZ, the renowned Russian automobile manufacturer, has officially unveiled the final version of its new LADA Iskra, set to hit the market on April 19, 2025. This launch is particularly significant as it introduces a model that will fill the gap between the existing Lada Granta and Vesta, offering consumers a fresh option in the affordable car segment.
According to reports from AvtoVAZ, the LADA Iskra will be available in three distinct body styles: sedan, universal, and cross-universal. All models are built on a redesigned modular platform known as CMF-B-LS, which has previously been utilized for the Dacia Logan and Sandero third generation, currently produced in Romania and Morocco. This platform adaptation signals AvtoVAZ's commitment to modernizing its production capabilities and enhancing vehicle design.
In terms of features, the Iskra is designed to compete closely with the LADA Vesta. The base model will come equipped with essential safety and convenience features including two front airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), a dynamic stabilization system (ESC), and a hill start assist system (HCA). Additional amenities such as light and rain sensors, an immobilizer, front power windows, and audio preparation will also be standard. Notably, the car will feature headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and turn signals, along with 15-inch steel wheels.
For those looking for more luxury, higher trim levels will include features like air conditioning, a height and reach adjustable steering column, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a rear view camera, fog lights with cornering illumination, and rear parking sensors. Furthermore, the multimedia system will boast an 8-inch touchscreen display, four audio speakers, and pre-installed Yandex services, enhancing the overall driving experience.
Initially, the LADA Iskra will be powered by an atmospheric engine derived from the Granta, with a displacement of 1.6 liters, producing either 90 or 106 horsepower. The lower-powered variant will be paired with a five-speed manual transmission, while the more powerful version will come with a six-speed manual transmission sourced from China and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Pricing for the new model is also a topic of interest. AvtoVAZ President Maxim Sokolov indicated that if sales were to commence today, the sedan would be priced at a minimum of 1.2 million rubles. However, with inflation and the current high key rate of the Central Bank, it is anticipated that the price could rise to approximately 1.3 million rubles by the time the model officially launches in the summer.
In a related development, AvtoVAZ has announced a temporary halt in production of the popular LADA Granta model, starting April 25, 2025. This pause will allow for a large-scale modernization of the assembly line, which is crucial for the introduction of the new LADA Iskra. The decision to suspend production is part of a carefully orchestrated plan to update the plant's production facilities and is not a reactionary measure.
The downtime will be split into two phases. From April 28 to April 30, employees working on the Lada Granta assembly line will receive compensation amounting to two-thirds of their salaries. This approach, while involving a temporary pay reduction, reflects AvtoVAZ's commitment to supporting its workforce during the transition. It is important to note that this is not indicative of layoffs, but rather a temporary break with partial compensation.
Following this three-day period, a corporate spring vacation is scheduled from May 1 to May 11. This time will be utilized for the most extensive portion of the modernization, involving significant technical transformations of the assembly line to accommodate the new LADA Iskra model.
Experts from AvtoVAZ, along with external specialists, will be engaged in reconfiguring the production line. Given the scale of the required work, a complete shutdown of Lada Granta production will be necessary during this period. The completion of all modernization efforts and the resumption of LADA Iskra production is targeted for May 12, 2025.
However, AvtoVAZ management has indicated that they reserve the right to extend the downtime and the compensation period if the scope of work exceeds initial expectations, potentially delaying the modernization process. The successful and timely completion of this project is essential for ensuring the factory operates smoothly and that the new model is launched without delay.
