Avalon Airshow 2025 Highlights Global Aviation Innovations

DroneShield partners with ADF while showcasing cutting-edge aircraft and careers for youth at Australia's largest airshow.

The Avalon Australian International Airshow 2025, taking place from March 24 to March 29, is set to be the largest in its history, showcasing the spectrum of civil and military aviation at Avalon Airport in Victoria, Australia. With 902 exhibitors from 28 nations and around 350 aircraft on display, this event promises to engage and inspire the public, industry professionals, and aspiring young minds alike.

In a notable highlight for this year's airshow, DroneShield reaffirmed its commitment to support the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Drone Racing Team. This partnership signifies a collaboration that extends beyond sponsorship, focusing on hands-on engagement within the drone racing environment. Oleg Vornik, CEO and Managing Director of DroneShield, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "The ADF Drone Racing Team represents the pinnacle of high-performance drone operations, and we are excited to continue our support at Avalon 2025." This collaboration will allow for the merger of expertise in both offensive and defensive drone technologies, vital in shaping the future of drone operations.

Furthermore, the ADF Drone Racing Association, led by Wing Commander Keirin Joyce, noted the importance of this partnership, asserting that it is invaluable in pushing the boundaries of what drones can accomplish not only in competitive settings but also in real-world applications on the battlefield. "By testing cutting-edge counter-drone technologies against some of the most skilled drone operators in Defence, we create a unique development loop that strengthens Australia's overall defence capabilities," Joyce remarked.

The Avalon International Airshow is not just a platform for military engagements but also serves as an educational catalyst for students. More than 7500 secondary school and tertiary students, along with educators, have registered for the event’s careers day, focusing on pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) within the Australian Defence Forces. The day will feature insights into various career opportunities available within the defence sector, encouraging youth to consider futures in aerospace sciences.

Scott Winchester, Director General of the Australian International Airshow, emphasized the ADF's commitment: "Our ADF always looks forward to participating in this tremendous event, being able to showcase what we do, day in and day out, with the Australian public. We are able to showcase not only our very capable aircraft and equipment but, most importantly, our incredible people." This sentiment is shared widely as the airshow serves as an important interface that connects the public to the defence forces, highlighting both innovation and operational realities.

In addition to the engaging displays, the Avalon airshow features a robust flying program showcasing a variety of aircraft. Notable flying displays will include fast jet fighters like the F-35A Lightning II and the FA-18F Super Hornet, as well as military transport and reconnaissance aircraft. Ground displays will include state-of-the-art aeromedical evacuation capabilities and innovative applications in drone racing. Troops will also have a chance to introduce the public to military working dogs, including puppies in training, further enhancing public interaction at the event.

The safety of aircraft operations during the airshow is paramount. Recently, a Tactical Aircraft Arrestor System (TAAS) successfully tested its emergency procedures at Avalon Airport. This system, which utilizes a wire-and-hook harness similar to those on aircraft carriers, allows for rapid deceleration and stop of military fast jets during landing under emergency circumstances. Flight Sergeant Anthony Ahchow explained that "Avalon Airport is one of the few civilian airfield locations that can support this system and the first non-defence site to have the upgraded concrete pads." He detailed how the system operates, indicating it can be rigged in under four minutes and reset within five minutes for a quick response to potential emergencies.

With the Avalon Australian International Airshow's focus on innovation in aviation, collaboration with Defence, and community engagement, it promises to be a landmark event. The outcomes of this six-day showcase aim to bolster the Australian aerial capabilities while inspiring the next generation of aviation enthusiasts. As AMDA CEO Justin Giddings remarked, "The week of Avalon has a special atmosphere, a feeling of being involved in something quite extraordinary. There’s a sense that the entire aviation community is in residence at Avalon for that week, with Avalon acting as a barometer for the health and future of the whole industry." Each day of the event will reveal new opportunities and relationships that serve the broader goals of aerospace development and community interaction.
