A massive avalanche struck the snow-covered region of Badrinath, Uttarakhand, on Friday morning, trapping 57 workers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) who were engaged in snow-clearing operations. The avalanche occurred around 7:15 AM and buried the workers inside eight containers and one shed at the BRO camp near Mana village, approximately five kilometers from the Badrinath shrine.
District magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed this distressing situation, stating, "We have so far rescued 16 workers, but 41 individuals remain trapped. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported yet." Rescue efforts are being spearheaded by the Indian Army’s IBEX Brigade along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). But heavy snowfall and continuous avalanches have made the operations more challenging.
The avalanche follows dire warnings issued the previous day. The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) had alerted authorities of potential avalanche risks for areas above 2,400 meters, emphasizing the severity of the approaching weather front. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed, "The situation is grave, and our disaster management teams, alongside the Army and ITBP, are working tirelessly to rescue those trapped."
Rescue images released by the Central Command of the Indian Army depicted their swift response, which included over 100 personnel equipped with medical resources, to aid the victims. "An avalanche struck a GREF camp near Mana village. A number of labourers are feared to be trapped. Despite heavy snowfall, our teams launched rescue operations immediately," stated General Officer Commanding the IBEX Brigade.
While 16 people have been brought to safety, many remain unaccounted for. Four individuals among the rescued are reportedly in serious condition and are receiving urgent medical attention. The government has also mobilized additional medical resources from Joshimath to support the rescue efforts.
Tragically, the rescue mission has been severely hampered by relentless snowstorms. SDRF Inspector General of Police noted, "We are encountering significant road blockages, particularly at Lambagad, complicate our access to the area." Weather conditions have led to helicopters being temporarily grounded, which has delayed evacuation plans for those still trapped.
Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister held emergency meetings with top officials to monitor rescue progress. He reaffirmed, "Our administration is fully engaged, and we are doing everything possible to assist the affected individuals." Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with CM Dhami to assess the situation, stressing the importance of ensuring the safe evacuation of all trapped workers. He assured the public, "Rescuing the people trapped is our top priority. The local administration and NDRF are fully mobilized for this rescue operation."
The workers, primarily engaged in clearing snow and maintaining roads for army movement, were on high alert following advisories about the biting cold and avalanche threats. Rescue operations remain hampered as natural elements continue to thwart progress, but teams are dedicated to searching for their colleagues trapped under the snow.
