Authorities believe they have identified the body of Joseph Couch, the alleged gunman involved in a shooting spree on Interstate 75, which left five injured earlier this month. This grim discovery was made on Wednesday afternoon, nearly two weeks after the shooting incident on September 7th, caused widespread fear throughout the local community of Laurel County, Kentucky.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police were notified at around 3:30 PM about the found body, located near exit 49 of the interstate. The investigation led officials to conclude, based on several items recovered near the body, including clothing and possibly weapons, it is Couch.
During the press briefing, state police commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. spoke to concerned residents, bringing together local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies who had been involved in the exhaustive manhunt spanning across 28,000 acres of the rugged Daniel Boone National Forest, where Couch was suspected to have been hiding prior to this discovery.
According to reports, Couch allegedly opened fire on Friday, September 7th, around 5:30 PM, targeting multiple vehicles traveling on the busy interstate. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos, with drivers scrambling for safety as approximately 20 to 30 rounds pierced through vehicles.
Emergency services arrived to find shattered glass and several cars marked with bullet holes, but thankfully, none of the injuries were life-threatening. All five shooting victims survived, though some faced serious injuries, compounding community fears. A lone person reportedly was shot in the face.
Earlier on the day of the shooting, Couch had expressed deadly intentions via text messages, stating ominously, "I'm going to kill a lot of people, well (I’m going to) try at least." This chilling message paved the way for heightened concern about his mental state leading up to the attack.

The couple's assistance did not go unnoticed; as part of their efforts, they are set to receive portions of the $35,000 reward offered for information leading to Couch’s capture.
