Authorities Crack Down On Illegal Streaming Networks

High-profile convictions signal tougher measures against streaming piracy across the U.S. and U.K.

A surge of illegal streaming cases is shaking the entertainment industry, with authorities cracking down on individuals and operations spanning across the United States and the United Kingdom. The latest high-profile convictions shed light on the extensive web of copyright infringement impacting content creators and legitimate streaming services.

One notable case involves Yoany Vaillant, 43, who was recently found guilty by a federal jury for his role with Jetflicks, one of the largest illegal streaming services operating out of Las Vegas. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Jetflicks allowed subscribers to stream and download thousands of television episodes without proper authorization, significantly infringing on copyright laws.

Vaillant, who had immigrant status and boasted proficiency in 27 computer programming languages, was instrumental in streamlining Jetflicks' operations. He worked on automations for downloading and providing access to over 183,000 episodes of television—much more than what's available on popular platforms like Netflix and Hulu. Prosecutors argue this illegal streaming service led to millions of dollars lost for the U.S. television industry.

This case is part of a larger crackdown on illegal streaming and piracy. Vaillant is notable for being the last of eight defendants indicted separate from the others in 2019 for their roles with Jetflicks. His co-defendants, such as Darryl Polo and Luis Villarino, have already received prison sentences due to their involvement. Authorities have categorized this as the largest internet piracy case by the volume of infringed materials ever taken to trial.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the British authorities are equally vigilant against illegal streaming. Recently, Jonathan Edge from Liverpool received over three years of prison time for running his own illegal streaming operation, focusing particularly on unauthorized access to Premier League football.

Edge operated by selling “fully loaded” Amazon Fire TV Sticks, which provided users with access to premium sports and television content without the required licenses. He aggressively promoted his illegal services, claiming affordability for individuals who could not access legitimate streaming channels. He was arrested following undercover operations by the copyright protection group FACT, leading to the seizure of multiple devices and customer information from his home.

Surprisingly, the court not only penalized him for his selling activities but also for watching the pirated content himself, indicating potential legal repercussions for users as well. Premier League General Counsel Kevin Plumb emphasized the seriousness of these piracies, stressing this as part of their continued efforts to combat illegal streaming-related operations.

These cases demonstrate the serious ramifications of illegal streaming for both the perpetrators and the entertainment industry. The crackdown reflects the growing concern around piracy and the drain it poses on the legitimate business of television and film production.

Authorities have stated this trend of enforcement is likely to continue, encouraging the public to steer clear of dubious streaming services. With the potential for harsh penalties, including imprisonment, viewers might reconsider their approach to accessing entertainment.

Across both continents, the message is clear—engaging with illicit streaming services can lead not only to personal legal trouble but also damages the broader entertainment ecosystem, affecting jobs, revenue, and the availability of quality content for audiences.
