Authorities Clarify Armed Men Incident In Mérida

Nine hunters legally transported firearms, easing public concerns.

On the night of February 21, 2025, police intercepted nine armed individuals driving through the Juan Pablo II subdivision in Mérida. The presence of firearms led to significant public concern, but the Yucatán Secretary of Public Security (SSP) clarified the situation shortly afterward.

The armed individuals, two Mexicans and seven Americans, were identified as members of the Asociación de Tiradores, Cazadores y Pescadores Asociados de Matamoros A.C. Their routine was disrupted when two vehicles, a white Tahoe and a Jeep, caught the attention of local law enforcement officers.

The police, upon stopping the vehicles, conducted standard inspections. They discovered ten shotguns and cartridges within the vehicles. When questioned about the firearms, the individuals swiftly presented documentation affirming the legal ownership of the weapons and the permits required for hunting activities.

According to the SSP, "The nine armed individuals traveling on two vehicles were members of the Asociación de Tiradores, Cazadores y Pescadores Asociados de Matamoros A.C." This association is recognized for its emphasis on legal hunting practices, demonstrating adherence to local laws.

Continuing the communication, the SSP clarified, "They presented the documentation which certifies the legal origin and possession of 10 shotguns and cartridges, as well as the permits for their hunting activity." This statement was pivotal as it helped quell fears ignited by rumors spread across social media platforms.

The investigation revealed the firearms were stored properly according to the prevailing regulations — inside the trunks of the vehicles, secured in their cases, unloaded, and kept separate from the ammunition. This aspect was particularly underscored during the inspection process, with the police confirming compliance with all legal standards.

Authorities took the additional step of verifying the documents with the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Ministry of National Defense) as part of their standard procedures. After thorough checks, including vehicle and weapons verification, the officers allowed the individuals to continue on their way.

Despite the fright spurred by the initial reports of armed men, the authorities reiterated the legal framework surrounding firearm possession. It’s important to note, as pointed out by local officials, carrying firearms without the proper license is illegal across Yucatán, echoing broader laws established by the Federal Law of Firearms and Explosives.

The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication between law enforcement and the community. The SSP emphasized their dedication to public safety and to addressing and correcting any misinformation swiftly.

Citizens are encouraged to remain informed and to utilize emergency contacts such as 911 or 089 if they find themselves in urgent situations requiring police assistance. Local authorities highlighted the everyday operations of these emergency numbers, which are available around the clock.

This encounter has unlocked discussions around lawful firearm use and hunting practices within the region, bringing attention to the requirements necessary for compliance with local laws governing firearm possession.

The SSP's careful handling of this situation reflects their commitment to ensuring public safety, and elucidated the correct procedures followed during law enforcement interventions. It also points to the broader narrative of community and safety, and how quickly speculation can arise from such encounters.
