Authorities Bust Major Auto Theft Ring In North Texas

Seven men charged with stealing luxury cars worth $9.3 million as police dismantle organized crime network

North Texas recently made headlines as authorities took down one of the largest auto theft rings to ever operate in the area. Seven men were apprehended following extensive investigations, and it was uncovered they were part of a sophisticated operation believed to have stolen over $9.3 million worth of luxury vehicles. This operation underscores the growing problem of vehicle theft across the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) region.

The investigation initially began back in November 2023. Grapevine Police became increasingly concerned with the rising number of vehicle thefts occurring, particularly at public locations such as parking lots. Amanda McNew, a spokesperson for the Grapevine Police Department, noted how crime analysts started tracking video footage from cameras and connecting the dots between different thefts. "Our crime analyst saw a vehicle and said, 'I think that's the vehicle from another one,'" McNew explained. This initial lead fueled what would become a massive crackdown.

By March 2024, authorities moved quickly, executing multiple SWAT raids across Garland and Dallas. These raids yielded quick results—stolen vehicles, tracking devices, and even firearms were recovered. The investigation revealed the men behind the ring had developed savvy tactics, such as using social media to flaunt their high-end stolen goods.

Among the seized vehicles were popular luxury brands, including Dodge Chargers, Dodge Challengers, and even Chevrolet Corvettes. The investigation also unveiled some shocking details, such as the suspect Jose Ramon Perez reportedly posting about stolen vehicles from inside his garage shortly before the raid. While rumors circulated about the possibility of Perez owning exotic animals, like tigers, police ended up towing away only stolen cars and high-tech device caches.

Law enforcement's strategic use of technology played a pivotal role throughout this operation. Surveillance videos, GPS tracking devices, and license plate readers helped establish links between stolen cars and the accused. Grapevine Police indicated dozens of thefts extended beyond Grapevine to other cities, including Euless, Irving, and Dallas. Evidence accumulated across these various jurisdictions points to at least 200 confirmed thefts tied to this group.

Interestingly, once the ring was dismantled, Grapevine Police noted unprecedented success; the city saw no auto thefts the month following the arrests. This outcome speaks volumes about the theft's impact on the community and highlights the effectiveness of timely law enforcement intervention.

Legal proceedings are already underway for the suspects, all of whom have been charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, classified as a first-degree felony. The seven charged individuals include Jeremiah Jose Morel (23), Cristian Jose Morel Jr. (24), Gavin Marcelino Correa (19), Dylan Anthony Correa (20), Kevin Oates (22), Jose Ramon Perez (27), and Henry Actwood Jr. (26). They've been released from custody on bond pending the next steps of the legal process.

Speculations about the group's violent nature also emerged during the investigation. Some members had prior active warrants for other serious crimes, including aggravated robbery. Grapevine Police emphasized their collaboration with federal law enforcement, stating they expect these cases to escalate to federal charges. This cooperation could widen the net as they continue to investigate potential connections and co-conspirators.

The widespread issue of vehicle theft is alarming, especially with reports indicating 316 stolen vehicles were reported between January 2023 and March 2024. Grapevine Police assured residents this recent success was no small feat, marking their efforts as instrumental to crime reduction.

It remains clear, though, the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures. McNew urged the community to stay vigilant, particularly when parked cars are left unattended or visible from public areas. Residents are encouraged to use secure parking areas, utilize steering locks, and invest in tracking technology for personal vehicles.

"It's always important to spread awareness and keep our community informed about possible at-risk situations," she said, reminding residents to protect their vehicles actively.

North Texas authorities continue to grapple with innovative crime tactics and the need for ongoing community cooperation. While this landmark operation dismantled one of the largest theft rings, the remnants of such criminal enterprises linger, urging law enforcement and communities alike to remain committed to the long fight against vehicle theft.

Overall, this case illuminates the challenges and potential for law enforcement to effectively intervene when communities unite against thefts.
