Austin Police Hunt For Serial Killer Linked To Two Murders

DNA evidence ties suspect to the tragic deaths of Alyssa Rivera and Alba Aviles, raising alarm across the community

The Austin Police Department (APD) is seeking the public's help to identify a suspected serial killer linked to the murders of two women. The investigation began when police discovered 34-year-old Alyssa Rivera's body inside an abandoned house on Metcalfe Road on June 21.

Initially, authorities thought Rivera's murder might be isolated, but the case took a chilling turn weeks later when DNA evidence connected her killing to another unsolved murder. Alba Jenisse Aviles, 28, was last seen leaving Club Caribe on April 14, 2018, just before her body was found parked on Old San Antonio Road.

The disturbing reveal has raised alarms across Austin, prompting significant community concern. To aid their investigation, the APD recently released surveillance footage showing a Hispanic male walking with Rivera shortly before her death.

Detective Gabriel Guillen, addressing the press, confirmed Rivera was sexually assaulted and strangled. This pattern of violence mirrors the circumstances surrounding Aviles's murder, which also involved strangulation and sexual assault.

On August 7, authorities received confirmation of the DNA link, which established both murders could be the work of the same perpetrator. Investigators are tight-lipped about the specific DNA sources discovered at the crime scenes but are treating the link as significant evidence.

Both women had no known connection, leading detectives to believe the suspect is targeting individuals independently. This gruesome scenario is not new for Austin, which has its history of serial killings.

Former enhancements to city safety measures have come under scrutiny with these recent developments. Infamously, Raul Meza Jr., dubbed Austin's first known serial killer since the 1800s, was arrested last year for multiple murders, including two known victims he strangled.

Meza's case highlighted concerns about the patterns of violent crimes and the psychological profiling of killers. Residents are now on high alert as the APD emphasizes the need for any potential witnesses to come forward.

Many community members and independent advocates have expressed unease about the proximity of these murders to nightlife areas. Fears are swirling particularly surrounding incidents near Lady Bird Lake, where multiple deaths occurred, though the APD states those cases are not directly linked to Rivera or Aviles.

Authorities clarified the distinction by asserting all deaths investigated by the homicide unit undergo thorough examination. Each incident prompts toxicology reports which can take time, raising apprehensions about potential dangers lurking nearby.

Detectives urge anyone with information to reach out to the APD at 512-974-TIPS. Even anonymous tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers platform could lead to critical breakthroughs.

Reportedly, tips leading to arrests could earn informants up to $1,000, emphasizing the department's push for public assistance. The community is left grappling with unsettled feelings, hoping justice can bring closure to such tragic losses.

While the investigation continues, the fear remains tangible among residents. Many hope the prompt collection of evidence can sidestep any future tragedies by quickly apprehending whomever is responsible.

This harrowing situation is stoking fears reminiscent of past stalking patterns. With greater community involvement and cooperation, investigators believe they stand a stronger chance of cracking this case wide open and bringing the suspect to justice.

The haunting imagery of these unsolved murders serves as both warning and rallying cry for vigilance among Austin's populace. The APD's determination to resolve this matter underscores the urgency felt throughout the region as the search intensifies for answers.
