Aurora, Illinois police have released body camera footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred last week, sparking significant community interest and concern. The incident centered around a 19-year-old man, Christopher Lepe, who was shot and killed by officers early in the morning of March 19, after police claimed he dragged an officer from his vehicle during a traffic stop.
In a video statement accompanying the release of the footage, Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross emphasized the department's commitment to transparency. "We want to be upfront—this footage contains graphic content and may be difficult to watch. Transparency is the cornerstone of our commitment to this community. The events leading to the shooting began around 1:30 a.m. on March 19, when a Geneva police officer approached Lepe’s vehicle parked in the 1500 block of South Randall Road. The officer suspected that Lepe may have been intoxicated. When the officer requested that he exit the car, Lepe allegedly drove off, dragging the officer a short distance and causing serious injury. The officer was subsequently taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital for treatment.
After fleeing, Lepe was located by Aurora police officers about 10 minutes later, driving a vehicle that matched the description of the one involved in the earlier incident. The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Lepe refused to comply, leading to a police chase which traveled onto northbound Route 25. Officers deployed stop sticks, successfully bringing the pursuit to an end near Ashland Avenue.
As officers approached the stopped vehicle, they reported that Lepe displayed a firearm, prompting two Aurora officers to open fire. Lepe was struck during the exchange and rendered first aid until he could be transported to Rush Copley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
