AtNorth Unveils Plans For Mega Data Center Expansion

Company's new site will boost capacity and sustainability efforts in Sweden.

atNorth, the leading Nordic colocation and high-performance computing provider, has officially secured land for its upcoming mega data center project, marking a significant step toward enhancing its operational capacity and presence in Sweden.

On December 16, 2024, the company announced its agreement with the Sollefteå Municipality to acquire the 30-hectare plot located at Hamre Industripark, just five and-a-half hours north of Stockholm. This new site aims for an initial capacity of 200 megawatts, directly addressing the surging demand for advanced data services.

The choice of location is strategic. Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, emphasized the benefits of the site, stating, "We are excited to be exploring the possibility of a new mega site in Sweden to complement our existing metro sites. With the growing demand for our sustainable infrastructure, we are committed to scaling responsibly to benefit the Nordic locations we inhabit." The site offers advantageous infrastructure, abundant energy capacity, and Sweden's favorable cool climate, making it ideal for data center operations.

Johan Andersson, who serves as the Chair of the Municipal Executive Committee, expressed enthusiasm for the development, describing it as, "a fantastic opportunity for Sollefteå Municipality and the Hamre area. We are delighted to collaborate with atNorth, a company leading data center solutions and sustainable technology. This project can help strengthen our region as a hub for innovative development." This sentiment emphasizes the local government's commitment to fostering technological growth and employment opportunities through partnerships with leading companies.

This new mega site will extend atNorth's capabilities, building on the recent launch of its SWE01 site, which opened its doors in Stockholm back in 2022. The existing SWE01 center provides over 2,800 square meters of white space and supports high-density workloads, including those related to artificial intelligence projects. It was developed to maximize heat recovery through innovative liquid cooling technologies.

atNorth is not just focusing on Sweden. The company is also experiencing rapid growth internationally. Earlier announcements highlighted the expansion of its data centers in Iceland, with the ICE02 site near Keflavík set to gain an additional 35 MW of capacity. Similarly, the ICE03 site located in Akureyri, which was opened just last year, is scheduled for another increase of 16 MW.

The strategic planning behind atNorth’s growth includes developing multiple data centers across the Nordics. Apart from the recent expansions, the company has three additional sites underway—two located in Finland and one more in Denmark. This growth strategy aligns with increasing global demands for data center services.

Given its dedication to sustainability, atNorth has integrated renewable energy resources and circular economy principles across its operations. Its data centers are built with innovative designs and energy-efficient technologies, establishing the firm not only as a leader in high-performance computing services but also as a responsible corporate citizen.

By ensuring its operations support environmental sustainability, atNorth has cultivated partnerships with industry-leading organizations, reinforcing its status as a reliable provider of colocation and high-performance computing services.

At its headquarters based in Reykjavik, Iceland, atNorth manages seven existing data centers across the Nordic area, with plans to open additional sites, including Helsinki, Finland, and Ballerup, Denmark, within the next year.

Overall, the establishment of the new mega site signals atNorth's ambitious growth strategy which aims to meet the increasing demands for high-performance computing and sustainable infrastructure. With the collaborative support from Sollefteå Municipality, atNorth is poised to make significant contributions to the local economy and the tech industry at large.

The future looks promising for atNorth, as they continue to innovate and expand within the Nordic market, providing advanced solutions and sustainable practices.
