Atalanta Intensifies Search For Striker Amid Injury Crisis

With key players sidelined, the club is exploring multiple options to bolster their attack this winter.

Atalanta is facing the pressing challenge of reinforcing its attacking front after injuries to key players Gianluca Scamacca and Mateo Retegui. The club is actively exploring options as the winter transfer window approaches, with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini emphasizing the importance of depth and competition to sustain their Scudetto ambitions and hopes for success in the Champions League.

The recent season has proven to be tumultuous for Atalanta, particularly due to the unfortunate injuries suffered by two forwards. Scamacca has been sidelined with a serious cruciate ligament tear since August, and Retegui, who was brought in to replace him during summer, is now facing his own challenges with a recent muscle injury suffered during their last game against Empoli. Reports suggest his recovery might keep him out of action for several weeks, prompting urgent discussions within the club about potential replacements.

According to Sportmediaset, Atalanta's list of potential signings includes several notable names. Chief among them is Joshua Zirkzee, currently struggling for playing time at Manchester United. The young forward has been identified as a viable loan option, perhaps with the possibility of making the move permanent if he performs well. "Zirkzee could be just what Atalanta needs to reinforce their squad," highlighted a source from Sportmediaset.

Other candidates include Marco Arnautovic, who is reportedly set to leave Inter Milan, and Beto from Everton, who has shown promise during his previous tenure at Udinese but has had difficulties replicative this form in the Premier League. Despite earlier interest from clubs like Roma, Beto's status suggests he could be eyed for another Serie A stint.

Giovanni Simeone has also come under consideration, as he is finding it difficult to secure regular minutes under Antonio Conte at Napoli. Although this adds complexity, reports suggest Atalanta might be able to negotiate for opportunities to reinforce their attack without significantly upsetting the balance within the league.

Meanwhile, Giacomo Raspadori is another name circulating around the potential transfer list. He nearly transferred to Atalanta during the summer but discussions fell through due to disagreements over the fee. With his current struggle for playing time at Napoli, Raspadori's prospects at Atalanta could align with both clubs' interests, particularly if Atalanta offers some compensation, possibly involving one of their defenders who may not be currently starting.

Gasparini understands the dire need for reinforcements to maintain their competitive edge. Their recent run of 11 consecutive victories has raised expectations, and the call for fresh talent could be what solidifies their position not just for survival but for true contention of the title. Discussions around stars like Federico Chiesa and Domenico Berardi, both potential returnees to Serie A from their respective clubs, indicate Atalanta's serious commitment to enhancing its lineup, even if these options present complex negotiations.

Chiesa, after inconsistent performances at Liverpool, is reportedly attracted to the idea of re-entering the Serie A milieu with Atalanta potentially offering him the platform for revival. On the other hand, Berardi from Sassuolo has also emerged as another strong option for Atalanta's management, with the hope of stitching together the right deal for his services, especially considering he’d fit seamlessly within their attacking style.

The winter transfer window will be pivotal for Atalanta. It’s their moment to address pressing gaps within their line-up, allowing them to remain competitive and continue their pursuit for both league and UEFA glory. Gasperini and the club's hierarchy are urged to make timely decisions as every moment matters.

By adequately replacing their injured stars, Atalanta might yet realize their dream of lifting the Scudetto this season.
