Aryna Sabalenka Dominates First Match Of Australian Open 2025

Defending champion starts strong, defeating Sloane Stephens and shares lighthearted moment with Jelena Dokic.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka kicked off her Australian Open 2025 campaign with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over former US Open champion Sloane Stephens on the iconic Rod Laver Arena. This win marks her attempt to secure a third consecutive title at the tournament, having previously unblemished records here, accumulating 15 straight victories.

Sabalenka, known for her aggressive play style, displayed remarkable poise against Stephens. After taking the first set, she faced some unexpected resistance when Stephens clawed back to within one game. "It was a tough match. They are always tough matches against her," Sabalenka said post-match. Despite some ups and downs throughout the match, the Belarusian undoubtedly asserted her dominance on the court and managed to push through, wrapping up the match without dropping a set.

The defending champion expressed her joy to be back on the Melbourne courts, stating, "I’m super happy to be back. I love this place and we have a full stadium, I mean I couldn’t dream for more." What made her participation even more memorable was her light-hearted post-match moment with former Australian tennis star, Jelena Dokic. After their interview, Dokic playfully suggested they show off some dance moves to the audience, much to Sabalenka's initial chagrin. "Now they have proof I'm the worst dancer," she quipped to the audience, as she and Dokic improvised some off-the-cuff dance steps together, leaving fans both amused and delighted.

Sabalenka’s performance on court reflects her intent to assert herself as the leading lady as she competes for her third straight title. With 28 of her last 29 matches won within the Australian grounds, she is considered the player to beat yet again. Her determination is evident from her performance, which follows her recent win at the WTA tournament held in Brisbane just prior to the Open, solidifying her status as the athlete to watch this year.

Off the court, Sabalenka shared insights reflecting on her career during the lead-up to her match. At just 26, the powerful athlete grappled with thoughts of retirement, humorously noting the inevitability of time: "People are retiring at like 30. Can you believe it?" She is already reminiscing about her youthful days running along Melbourne’s Yarra River and candidly acknowledged her need to pace herself more on the court. Though her focus is on the present and the matches to come during the Australian Open, thoughts of having a family hint at shifts upcoming in her life beyond tennis. "I hope I’ll have family. I love kids. I really want to have (them) and then come back," she remarked, blending her aspirations off the court along with her undeniable competitive spirit.

With her victory against Stephens, Sabalenka will now face Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who won her opening match as well. While the first match had its challenges, the defending champion managed to close the gap and secure the lead soundly, showcasing her strength and resilience. Sabalenka's next match promises to be just as competitive as her opponents aim to topple the current champion.

Sabalenka’s Australian Open 2025 campaign remains eagerly anticipated. Her existing momentum, combined with her candidness about career reflections and personal aspirations, adds unique depth to her presence this year. With more matches to follow, she seems ready for the challenges and embraces the supportive spirit surrounding her, feeling truly at home within the Melbourne Park atmosphere.
