Artur Jorge Set To Leave Botafogo For Al-Rayyan

After leading Botafogo to historic titles, the coach prepares for new adventure as club confirms negotiations with Qatar's team.

Artur Jorge, the Portuguese head coach of Botafogo, is poised to leave the Brazilian football club after leading it through a remarkable season. Under his leadership, Botafogo delivered impressive results, clinching both the prestigious Copa Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro titles. This historic achievement marked the first time Botafogo has won the Libertadores, creating unforgettable memories for the fans. Now, as the year winds down, discussions surrounding Jorge's departure have intensified, with reports confirming his imminent move to the Qatari club Al-Rayyan.

Various sources indicate Jorge's future has been up for debate with the Botafogo management, particularly following growing dissatisfaction within the club's upper echelons. John Textor, the majority shareholder of Botafogo's Sociedade Anônima do Futebol (SAF), has decided against offering Jorge the salary increase he sought to remain with the club. "John Textor desiste de reajuste salarial e já trata a saída como certa," reported Gilmar Ferreira from Extra, highlighting Textor's disappointment upon learning of Jorge's negotiations with Al-Rayyan.

The coach is currently under contract with Botafogo until December 2025. Nevertheless, Al-Rayyan appears eager to secure his services, signaling its intent to pay Jorge's release clause, which is estimated at €2 million (approximately R$ 12.5 million). Jorge's potential salary increase seemed unlikely to materialize, as reports indicated the club would be focusing its resources elsewhere. Textor acknowledged this tension, realizing it could affect morale and performance as the players gear up for the 2025 season.

Reports suggest Jorge's commitment to Botafogo started to wane as he openly discussed offers from other clubs, creating what insiders called "an unsustainable environment" at Botafogo. A news article noted, "A iminente saída de Artur Jorge se assemelha muito à forma que ele deixou o Braga," referring to Jorge's prior departure from another club under similar circumstances, which was marked by controversy. His actions and negotiations certainly displeased many within Botafogo.

Looking at Jorge's impact at Botafogo, fans are celebrating his tactical acumen, which led the club to considerable success. He took over the coaching duties back in April 2024, replacing Tiago Nunes, who had been dismissed just months before. Jorge's record stands at 54 matches, out of which he secured 31 wins, led the team to 15 draws, and only faced defeat eight times—a commendable performance. Artur Jorge marked his name indelibly as one of the great coaches of the club's history during such a brief period.

With Jorge's exit practically sealed, Botafogo will now focus on searching for his replacement. The club aims to find another coach who can step up to the plate and hopefully replicate the success achieved under Jorge. Until then, the management is busy preparing for the rebuilding phase, with plans for reassembling the squad going forward.

Botafogo supporters remain anxious yet hopeful as the organization navigates this pivotal transition period. With his departure, fans are reminded of the fleeting nature of success and the challenges faced when building strong, competitive football teams. The events are still fresh, and many will look back fondly at the memorable season Jorge provided, even as uncertainty looms over the next chapter for the club.

Looking ahead, as Botafogo approaches the new season, the board is expected to officially announce Jorge's departure once the financial details are finalized with Al-Rayyan. Such transitions are part and parcel of the unpredictable world of football—where managers often move swiftly from club to club, driven by the allure of new opportunities and challenges.
