Arson Suspected After Fire At Groningen's The Market Hotel

An investigation is underway after hotel guests were evacuated due to smoke and flames before midnight.

A suspected arson at The Market Hotel in Groningen has left guests temporarily displaced and raised alarm bells among local authorities.

The fire broke out just before midnight, with alarming reports indicating it was intentionally set. According to the hotel manager, Niek Strous, surveillance footage from the hotel supports suspicions of foul play.

Guests were evacuated around 11:30 PM, quickly being ushered out as smoke filled the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and hotel guests were later assisted with refreshments from nearby Hotel De Doelen.

The fire was officially reported around 11:30 PM on Sunday evening, leading to immediate responses from local fire services who managed to control the situation, allowing guests to return to their rooms by 1:30 AM. "Colleagues from Hotel De Doelen caught them with a cup of tea," Strous reported. "We tried to keep them as informed as possible about everything. It's quite unpleasant, but we certainly didn’t ask for this."

Upon arriving at the scene, Strous found the hotel heavily damaged, describing the aftermath; "The hotel downstairs is quite the wreck. Ceiling panels have been removed to confirm the fire was out. We're currently assessing the damage with specialists and hoping to resolve everything as soon as possible." The incident appears to be significant, as it occurred at such an iconic location—the Grote Markt, known for its vibrant public life.

The urgency was palpable as guests awaited updates outside, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Groningen's night economy. Strous expressed hope for his visitors, "We hope they eventually managed to get some good sleep tonight, considering the circumstances."
Authorities remain on high alert, as the investigation begins to ascertain how this fire was started, with Strous confirming the police would be continuing their inquiries. "On the basis of CCTV footage, we suspect arson," he elaborated when speaking to Radio Noord, unfortunately unable to disclose specific details due to the active investigation.

The Market Hotel, like many establishments, has now been faced with unexpected challenges, leaving both management and the community on edge. Each element is being taken seriously, to not only protect the hotel’s future but also to reassess safety protocols to safeguard guests at all times.

This incident serves as both a reminder and warning of the unpredictable nature of hospitality settings, where unforeseen challenges can strike suddenly. Groningen's local government and law enforcement are committed to considering all angles to safeguard public and private venues alike, as they work closely to resolve this worrying event.
