An arrest warrant has been issued against former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, who stands accused of committing fraud involving the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). The warrant, signed by regional PF commissioner Shadakshari Gopal Reddy, commands the Pulakeshinagar police in Bengaluru to act on the order by December 27, 2024.
The core of the allegations revolves around Uthappa’s management role at three companies—Strawberry Lenceria Pvt. Ltd., Centaurus Lifestyle Brands Pvt. Ltd., and Berryz Fashion House. It is claimed he failed to deposit approximately Rs. 23.36 lakh, which was deducted from employees’ salaries as their provident fund contributions. The failure to deposit these funds has reportedly hindered these employees from accessing their due amounts.
According to the warrant issued on December 4, Uthappa’s prior address was not current, leading to initial difficulties for law enforcement in locating him. It has surfaced since then, according to media reports, he and his family are currently residing in Dubai.
Uthappa has spoken out about the allegations, asserting he had "no executive role" within any of the implicated companies. He stated, "I did not have an active role or manage the day-to-day operations of these businesses," emphasizing his scant involvement due to his busy career as a professional cricketer.
Having retired from both international and Indian cricket by 2022, Uthappa explained how he was appointed as director of these firms back in 2018-2019 primarily to provide financial support through loans. He underscored this point: "I became director because of my financial contributions, not through any active role." He mentioned he had resigned from these positions several years ago due to his inability to manage business operations alongside his commitments as a cricketer, TV presenter, and commentator.
Uthappa's circumstances have taken another turn as legal actions ensue. Reportedly, he has initiated legal proceedings against the companies due to their failure to repay the loans he extended. "Regrettably, these companies failed to repay the funds I lent them, leading me to initiate legal proceedings, which are currently sub judice," Uthappa stated.
He also revealed, "When the Provident Fund authorities sent notices asking for payment, my legal team replied with proof showing I had no role in the companies." This response allegedly included documentation confirming his non-involvement, yet the authorities proceeded with their actions regardless.
Highlighting the media’s role during this process, Uthappa said, "I request the media to share verified and complete information about the case," indicating his frustration with how the allegations have been reported.
The warrant issued against Uthappa utilizes rules specified within the Income Tax Act of 1961 and the Employees’ Provident Funds Act of 1952.
