Ariana Grande Mourns Beloved Grandmother Nonna At 99

Marjorie Grande, known as Nonna, passed peacefully surrounded by family, leaving a lasting legacy through music and love

Ariana Grande, the Grammy-winning pop icon, is mourning the loss of her beloved grandmother, Marjorie Grande, affectionately known as "Nonna." The family announced on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, that Marjorie passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones. She was 99 years old.

The heartfelt statement, shared by Ariana's mother, Joan Grande, and reposted by Ariana on her Instagram Story, read: "We are devastated to share that the beloved matriarch of our family has passed away. Marjorie (Nonna) Grande passed peacefully in her home and was surrounded by her family and loved ones for every moment of her last few weeks. We thank you for your love, support and for respecting our privacy as we grieve and celebrate her beautiful, extraordinary life."

Marjorie Grande held a special place in Ariana's heart and career. Known not only as a cherished grandmother but also as a musical collaborator, Marjorie made history last year by becoming the oldest artist ever to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. At age 98, she was featured on the track "Ordinary Things" from Ariana's 2024 album Eternal Sunshine, which debuted at number 55 on the chart. This remarkable feat highlighted the deep bond between the two generations and showcased Marjorie's vibrant spirit.

In the closing moments of "Ordinary Things," Marjorie shares heartfelt advice drawn from her decades-long marriage to her late husband, Frank Grande. She urges, "Never go to bed without kissing goodnight. It's the worst thing to do. Don't ever, ever do that. And if you can't, and if you don't feel comfortable doing it, you're in the wrong place. Get out." Frank, a veteran whom she met when she was just 11, passed away in 2014 at the age of 90.

Ariana's affection for her Nonna extended beyond music. In 2024, she flew to Boca Raton, Florida—her grandmother's hometown—to watch the movie Wicked together, a shared experience Ariana described as surreal. "To hold her hand—oh my God I’m getting emotional," Ariana said during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show last year. Marjorie had been a steadfast supporter of Ariana's career from the very beginning, attending public events and even appearing alongside her during performances, such as the 2018 rendition of "God is a Woman," where Marjorie, Joan, and Ariana's cousin Lani joined her on stage.

Frankie Grande, Ariana's older brother, also expressed his profound grief and love on social media. Posting a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, he wrote, "I love you endlessly, my sweet Nonna. I miss you more than words can hold. My heart is shattered, but I feel you watching over me, already so proud of everything I’ve done and all that is about to come." He reflected on the countless lessons she imparted, including the importance of family loyalty and living authentically. "You taught me how to not give a single f*ck about what anyone thinks, and most importantly, how to show up for family in a way so deep, so unwavering, that I promise you: I will carry that torch fiercely in your absence. No question. No option," he added.

Marjorie's influence reached back to Ariana's earliest days in entertainment. From her very first role playing the lead in a local theater production of Annie in 2002, Marjorie was her biggest fan, recognizing her granddaughter's talent early on. Ariana herself has shared stories of recording her grandmother's voice for her albums, capturing candid moments and wisdom. Marjorie's voice also features on other songs, including "Bloodline" from Ariana's 2019 album Thank U, Next and "Daydreamin'" from her debut album Yours Truly, featuring both Marjorie and Frank.

At the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, Ariana revealed that her grandmother was the second person she called after learning about her nomination for the role of Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie adaptation, underscoring the deep personal connection they shared.

Following the announcement of Marjorie's passing, Ariana posted a touching black-and-white photo of her grandparents, likely taken on their wedding day, captioned simply, "forever." This image encapsulates a lifetime of love and family bonds that shaped not only Ariana's life but also her artistry.

Marjorie Grande's legacy is one of love, resilience, and inspiration. Her presence in Ariana's life was a constant source of strength and joy, and through their shared music, her voice will continue to resonate with fans worldwide. As the Grande family grieves, they also celebrate a beautiful, extraordinary life that touched many.
