Archdiocese Of Lusaka Celebrates Faith And Hope Through Key Events

Archbishop Banda’s visit inspires the community as PMS Directors gather for renewal and collaboration.

The Archdiocese of Lusaka recently marked significant milestones in its religious community with two key events: the confirmation ceremony held at St. Lawrence Parish and the National Council Meeting of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). These activities underline the Church's commitment to fostering faith and community engagement among Zambians.

His Grace, Most Rev. Alick Banda, presided over the confirmation of 137 candidates on Sunday at St. Lawrence Parish, Kamwala South. This sacrament symbolizes not just the growth of individual faith, but also signifies the Church's enduring presence and support within the community. Following the ceremony, Archbishop Banda reached out beyond the church’s confines, visiting homes within Misisi and Kamwala South to bring Holy Communion and offer encouragement to the sick and bedridden.

During his visit, he assured the faithful of God’s unwavering presence, reminding them they were not alone amid their struggles. His homily drew inspiration from the prophet Jeremiah, driving home the assurance: “God sees our hunger and promises to satisfy us. Jesus invites us to embrace our vulnerability, knowing He is in control.” The archbishop’s message—centered around trust and hope—echoed through the gathered congregation, reinforcing their commitment to faith.

Archbishop Banda emphasized Christ’s inclusive mission by saying, “Jesus came for the last, the least, and the lost.” This reminder served as encouragement for the faithful, inspiring them to renew their trust in God’s providence as they navigated personal challenges.

Meanwhile, the PMS Directors convened at the Kasisi Retreat Centre on the outskirts of Lusaka for their National Council Meeting, where themes of missionary formation and shared experiences signified the spirit of unity within the Church. Bishop Edwin Mulandu, the National Director and Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mpika, opened the meeting by expressing gratitude for the dedication of the PMS Diocesan Directors who traveled from across Zambia.

At the closing Mass on February 21, 2025, Bishop Mulandu—who is set to conclude his ten-year tenure as National Director later this year—spotlighted the importance of their collective work, saying, “Your loyalty has strengthened the foundations of our universal Church here and abroad.” The camaraderie among the Directors was palpable as they celebrated their past achievements and discussed the challenges they face within their dioceses.

The PMS Directors reaffirmed their mission under the Jubilee Year theme, “Pilgrims of Hope,” emphasizing their commitment to promoting missionary work throughout Zambia. Sharing insights and reports about activities, achievements, and plans for the future, the Directors highlighted both the hurdles overcome and the aspirations moving forward.

This meeting was not merely administrative but served as a rejuvenation of spirit, fostering greater engagement with their communities. Their collective commitment to missionary work was encapsulated by the closing remarks, which inspired optimism for continued growth and connection across the dioceses.

The Archdiocese of Lusaka’s recent activities reflect broader themes within the Church, marking significant strides toward deepening faith and outreach among Zambian communities. Both Archbishop Banda’s pastoral visit and the PMS council meeting showcase the Church’s dedication to meeting both the physical and Spiritual needs of its congregation, reinforcing the belief shared among parishioners—that they are not left alone to navigate their journeys through faith.

Overall, these two events not only highlight the efforts of the clergy but also serve as reminders of the communal strength found within faith. The resonance of hope articulated by both leaders—Archbishop Banda and Bishop Mulandu—demonstrates how faith can strengthen connections, inspire change, and uplift communities during challenging times.
