Aragón Braces For Wind And Snow This Weekend

AEMET warns of strong winds and potential snowfall as temperatures fluctuate across the region.

As spring finally graces Aragón with some sunshine, the region is bracing for a weekend marked by yellow weather alerts. According to the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET), this alert is primarily due to strong winds rather than rain, with gusts expected to reach up to 100 kilometers per hour in the Pyrenees of Huesca. This area is particularly affected, as it also faces a yellow alert for snow, with accumulations of up to 5 centimeters possible within 24 hours above elevations of 1000-1100 meters, accompanied by blizzard conditions.

Other regions under yellow alert include the Ribera del Ebro, where wind gusts could hit 70 kilometers per hour on Saturday, March 29, 2025. Gúdar and Javalambre are also expected to experience strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching 80 kilometers per hour. The winds are forecasted to bring a slight drop in temperatures across Aragón, shifting from highs of 17 degrees Celsius on Friday to 14 degrees on Saturday in Zaragoza, from 17 to 13 degrees in Huesca, and from 14 to 11 degrees in Teruel.

The minimum temperature in Teruel is expected to dip to around 1 degree over the weekend. For Sunday, March 30, while AEMET has not yet activated any alerts, similar wind patterns are anticipated. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly, with maximums returning to 17 degrees in Zaragoza and Huesca, and reaching 16 degrees in Teruel. Following this alert-filled weekend, temperatures are projected to rebound, reaching up to 20 degrees in all three provincial capitals.

Meanwhile, the weather across Spain is set to change dramatically next week, with AEMET predicting significant rainfall starting March 31, 2025. Initially, on Saturday, March 29, rain is expected to be confined to the extreme northeast of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands, and the western Canary Islands. However, very strong wind gusts are forecasted for the Ebro Valley, Pyrenees, Ampurdán, and Balearic Islands on the same day.

Sunday, March 30, will see a continuation of sunny skies, although some precipitation may still occur in the western Canary Islands. Overall, temperatures will remain slightly below normal in many areas, except for the southwest of the peninsula, where an increase is anticipated. Starting from Monday, March 31, the trend will shift towards stability with rising temperatures.

As we look ahead to the week of April 7 to April 13, 2025, AEMET warns of uncertainties in the predictions, particularly concerning rainfall. The forecast indicates that temperatures will likely remain above average in the west and center of the peninsula, while precipitation could be below normal. However, AEMET emphasizes that the forecasts are subject to change, and updates will be necessary as the dates approach.

April will begin on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, and with its arrival, many are wondering what the weather will bring in light of the Semana Santa festivities, which occur from April 14 to April 20. AEMET has stated that during the week leading up to Semana Santa, from March 31 to April 6, temperatures are expected to be higher than usual, particularly in the mountainous regions of northern Spain. Rainfall, however, is anticipated to be concentrated in the second half of the week, leading to accumulations that could exceed typical levels for this time of year.

In contrast, the Canary Islands are expected to experience more rain at the beginning of this period, which is a stark departure from the drier conditions anticipated on the mainland. As for the second week of April, AEMET suggests that precipitation might be below normal, although no clear trends are evident for the Mediterranean and the islands.

Looking back at last year, Semana Santa was heavily impacted by storm Nelson, which brought significant rainfall and disrupted processional plans in Granada. Some areas recorded over 100 liters per square meter, along with strong winds. This year, the weather outlook remains uncertain, but AEMET is committed to providing regular updates as the holiday approaches.

In summary, Aragón is set for a weekend of challenging weather conditions, with strong winds and potential snowfall. As the region transitions into April, the focus will shift to the upcoming Semana Santa festivities and how the weather will influence celebrations. With AEMET's predictions indicating a mix of rising temperatures and potential rain, residents and visitors alike are advised to stay informed about the evolving weather patterns.
