Apple Settles Siri Privacy Lawsuit For $95 Million

After years of legal battle and scrutiny, Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle allegations stemming from its Siri voice assistant's purported role in eavesdropping on users. The proposed settlement arrives following claims dating back to 2019, when users accused Apple of activating Siri unintentionally, capturing private conversations, and sharing sensitive information with advertisers.

The lawsuit, filed in Oakland, California, alleges Apple compromised users' privacy by recording conversations without consent and using this data to target advertisements. The specifics are unsettling; two plaintiffs reported receiving ads for products they mentioned casually, including Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden. They argued this was clear evidence of Siri’s unintended activation and subsequent eavesdropping.

Legal proceedings revealed the depth of these claims, partly fueled by investigations conducted by outlets like The Guardian. Reports indicated Apple employed third-party contractors to listen to recorded Siri interactions, including private discussions involving medical appointments and personal matters—rife with sensitive data.
