Apple has reached a significant legal milestone with a proposed $95 million settlement over allegations surrounding its Siri voice assistant improperly recording and retaining user conversations. This resolution stems from claims made by users who contend their private discussions were inadvertently captured and heard by third parties, prompting serious questions about data privacy and the security of personal information.

The events leading to this settlement date back to July 2019 when revelations emerged from a whistleblower. They disclosed how Siri was often activated unintentionally, capturing snippets of personal conversations. According to The Guardian, these recordings included sensitive details, from medical discussions to intimate family matters, as apparent triggers—even common noises—could erroneously set off the assistant.

Under the terms of the proposed settlement, which still requires judicial approval, eligible U.S. users owning Siri-enabled devices could receive compensation of up to $20 per device, and can claim for up to five devices purchased between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. The devices affected include iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and even Apple TVs. To qualify, users must attest under oath to unintended activations during private conversations.

Despite its agreement to this settlement, Apple has maintained its innocence, vehemently denying any wrongdoing. The company expressed its desire to avoid prolonging litigation, opting instead to resolve the issue amicably.
