Apple Launches New AirPods Max With USB-C And Fresh Colors

The updated version lacks major hardware upgrades but introduces vibrant color options and USB-C compatibility

Apple Launches New AirPods Max With USB-C And Fresh Colors

Apple has just made waves with its updated AirPods Max, debuting on September 20, 2024. While some enthusiasts were eager for significant upgrades, the changes are largely cosmetic—an upgrade to USB-C charging and the introduction of several new colors. The AirPods Max 2, which will be available for preorder, maintain their high price of $549.

The updated AirPods Max are available in five bright colors: Blue, Orange, Purple, Midnight, and Starlight. These colors add pizzazz to the once monochrome lineup. Plus, there’s the switch from Apple's proprietary Lightning port to the more universal USB-C port, which aligns with new EU regulations aimed at standardizing charging cables across devices. While the move to USB-C is welcomed for convenience, Apple fans are still waiting for more substantial functionalities like adaptive audio features, which are not found in this version.

Interestingly, Apple has also started selling replacement ear cushions compatible with the existing first-generation AirPods Max. For those who want to change their style without shelling out for the new model, these cushions, offered at $69 each, allow users to swap out their ear pads for the vibrant new colors. This means you don’t necessarily have to ditch your old headphones to embrace the fresh look.

Despite the cosmetic overhaul, the AirPods Max 2 have left some fans feeling let down due to the lack of updates beyond aesthetics. Notably, the AirPods Max have not integrated the H2 chip introduced with the AirPods Pro 2. The absence of this chip means features like Adaptive Audio, which blends ambient sound with music, and enhanced noise cancellation will not be available. This is particularly disappointing for audiophiles and tech enthusiasts who were expecting improvements to audio performance.

Comparing these new headphones with existing models, it’s clear Apple positioned the AirPods Max as more of a refresh rather than a true next-generation product. The price remains high, keeping the headphones competitive but at the expense of cutting-edge technology. Apple faces stiff competition from brands like Bose and Sennheiser, which offer comparable premium headphones, prompting the focus on visuals over functional advancements.

With the AirPods Max currently not being sold with the Lightning port on Apple's official store, there’s been speculation about Apple phasing out the older model. Aiming to consolidate products under this new standard could streamline their offerings but leaves customers who prefer the original model at a crossroads.

Aside from these technical aspects, the AirPods Max 2's design continues to be praised. Users can indulge in the over-ear headphone experience, known for its comfort and quality sound reproduction. Some semi-circular designs and cushioning also help users enjoy lengthy listening sessions without discomfort.

While Apple fans are thrilled about new colorways, they’re left yearning for what could have been. Many are hoping future releases will include more advanced features reflective of their 2024 status. Until then, it seems users will have to appreciate the AirPods Max 2 for what they are—a stylish update to an already popular product line.

Given the competitive headphone market, how will Apple respond to customer expectations? Will the AirPods Max 2 be merely transitional until true updates are initiated? Tech enthusiasts will keep their fingers crossed for answers very soon.
